U.S. pediatricians can now recommend diet pills and surgery for obese children

Obese children as young as 12 years old may consider weight-loss pills, and severely obese children as young as 13 years old may consider metabolic or bariatric surgery, according to new guidelines released Monday by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The guideline marks the first time the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends diet pills for obese children. Obesity can lead to long-term health problems such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes, and the Academy of Pediatrics recommends interventions for obese children before these problems arise. Before the pandemic, 14.7 million children and adolescents in the United States were obese, a phenomenon exacerbated by policies such as the lockdowns used during the pandemic.
