U.S. to generate more electricity from renewables than coal by 2022

For the first time in more than six decades, electricity generation from renewables in the U.S. will surpass coal in 2022. Renewable sources of electricity, including wind, solar and hydro, accounted for 22 percent of the total, ahead of coal at 20 percent. U.S. greenhouse gas emissions remained higher than the previous year, largely due to a rebound in U.S. air travel following the COVID-19 pandemic, with increased jet fuel driving the rise. As part of the Paris Agreement, the United States committed to halving its emissions by 2030 from 2005 levels. US emissions are now only 15% below 2005 levels, and it needs to cut another 35% over the next eight years.
