The UK government has proposed a bill to pave the way for the breeding and breeding of gene-edited animals and plants. The proposed bill would ease regulation of gene-editing (not genetically modified) products and would initially apply primarily to plants. Gene editing involves turning an organism’s genes off or on by tailoring small stretches of DNA. It can develop new varieties faster. Biotech companies and agricultural researchers lobbied the government to legislate for commercializing genetically modified crops, but government ministers decided to take a more cautious approach. Regulations set by the European Union restrict the use of gene-editing technology. But Brexit has allowed the UK to make its own rules.
