US study uses AI to uncover anonymous authorship

The Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA), a research arm of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), launched The Human Interpretable Attribution of Text Using Underlying Structure (HIATUS) research project to develop software that can recognize language fingerprints. Human-authored texts contain linguistic features of authors that can be used to reveal authorship. IARPA believes that with the right model, the author’s style can be identified from different text samples, and the software can also modify this style to mask authorship and achieve text anonymity.
