US to announce a major breakthrough in nuclear fusion research

The U.S. Department of Energy will announce a major breakthrough in fusion research Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET. Nuclear fusion energy is believed to provide unlimited clean energy. The breakthrough was made by researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), during a news conference that included Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm, Under Secretary for Nuclear Security and NNSA Administrator Jill Hruby, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Dr. Arati Prabhakar, Director; Dr. Marvin “Marv” Adams, Deputy Administrator for Defense Programs, National Nuclear Security Administration; Dr. Kim Budil, Laboratory Director, LLNL. The National Ignition Facility for laser fusion research in the United States is located at LLNL, which uses 192 giant laser emitters to simulate the fusion process inside stars by heating hydrogen atoms.
