The following is the text of this issue, and the reading time is about 10 minutes.

1. Learning for yourself or learning for others

The ancient scholars were for themselves, and the present scholars are for others.
This sentence comes from “The Analects of Confucius Xianwen”. Translated into modern Chinese, it can be simply expressed as: the ancients studied for self-growth, but today people study to gain the attention of others.
This leads to a thought-provoking question: Is learning for self or for others?
I think that on this issue, the most important point is that learning should be for oneself first. This does not mean that we should be selfish, but rather emphasizes that before we attempt to teach or share knowledge with others, we must first understand and master it. Otherwise, if we rush to teach others without fully understanding and mastering a knowledge point, we may mislead them and may even cause unforeseen harm.
Furthermore, self-improvement is fundamental to learning. In this rapidly changing era, we need to constantly learn new knowledge and improve ourselves in order to maintain our competitiveness in society. Just as a building without a solid foundation cannot withstand the invasion of wind, frost, rain and snow, learning without self-improvement cannot move forward steadily in the ocean of knowledge.
However, this does not mean that we should only focus on self-improvement during our learning process. Personal vision and experience always have their limitations, but the exchange and sharing of knowledge can lead to powerful synergies. We can learn from others and at the same time help others by sharing our knowledge. This kind of learning is for others, but not to attract the attention of others, but to achieve common progress.
The idea of learning through knowledge sharing is reflected in both the Feynman method of learning and the Explanation Effect. Both approaches emphasize the importance of knowledge sharing for self-learning.
Therefore, in the process of learning, we should not only pay attention to self-improvement, but also don’t forget to share our knowledge with others to achieve common progress. As for wanting to attract others with this, it is unnecessary.

2. The trap of “time management”

Weichen, the manager of “Life Journey”, has an article “Guidelines for Time Management Facing Reality” , which introduces in detail his cognition of time management and the way of time management.
Out of curiosity about time management, I am currently reading the book “Four Thousand Weeks” . Coincidentally, there was an article “The Trap of “Time Management”” this Monday, which was recommended to me by several friends, from Richie Norton, the author of “Anti-Time Management” .
He begins by pointing out that even though “management” literally means “control,” in the actual implementation of time management, our time is often controlled by others, not ourselves. This is because the concept of time management was devised by industry to allow managers to control when and how employees work. For example, employees’ working hours, vacation time, etc. are all factors affected by time management.
However, while time management sounds appealing in theory, it has not worked out as expected. In practice, time management often results in increased workload and less available time. This is because personal productivity is bad for work productivity in time management mode: the more available time you create, the more work you have to do. This also creates a paradox: the more work done, the more work will be given to you to complete. (The workers who pursue efficiency shed tears ? )
In addition, Norton notes that time management creates an efficiency heuristic between management and workers that can lead to work being divided and lengthened unnecessarily. This phenomenon reflects that efficiency and productivity are not necessarily equal, and we need to avoid wasting energy on unimportant things.
After criticizing the traps of time management, Norton proposed a new method of time management, namely “anti-time management”. Anti-time management emphasizes our own control over time, rather than letting time be controlled by others. Our choices affect our time management more than any person or system. Therefore, we need to realize that each of our decisions is a choice, and they all have potential consequences.
Anti-time management encourages us to proactively make decisions that free up time now and in the future instead of being occupied by time management.
In traditional time management, our schedule may be full, but anti-time management makes our schedule more open and flexible. This approach can make us feel productive and have more free time while working.
In other words, the goal of anti-time management is to give us more choice; it also means we have more time freedom. Learning and applying time flipping can make a huge difference with just small changes.
So how to change it?
Norton mentioned that time reversal is a specific practice of anti-time management, which can help us reduce risks, stop waiting and start acting. A time-turner creates a solid flow around goals and integrates dreams into everyday life.
Therefore, time reversal can be seen as a way of life that encourages us to:
  1. Understanding our goals and dreams: Our time should be spent pursuing the things we truly love, not being consumed by things we don’t care about. Understanding our goals and dreams is the first step to turning time around.
  1. Develop a strategy: We need to develop specific strategies for achieving our goals and dreams. This might include creating a timeline, setting priorities, and even finding a partner.
  1. Action: Only through action can we achieve our goals. This includes taking action not just at work, but in life as well. Our time should be used for meaningful things, not wasted.
  1. Reflection and adjustment: Time reversal is not a one-time process, but requires continuous reflection and adjustment. We need to check our progress regularly to see if we need to adjust our strategy.
  1. Enjoy the process: Last, but not least, we need to enjoy the process. Time Flip is not just about efficiency, it is also about enjoying our time and finding joy in life.

3. The double threat of the climate crisis

According to a report released by the Copernicus Center for Climate Change Services (C3S), July this year became the hottest month on record globally. Compared with the July average temperature from 1850 to 1900, the global average temperature has risen by more than 1.5°C, making it the first time that the global monthly average temperature has risen above this critical critical point.
In the face of this phenomenon, scientists warn that climate warming will not only lead to an increase in natural disasters such as extreme heat, floods, droughts, and wildfires, posing a direct threat to human survival, but may also aggravate mental health problems and trigger a series of social problems.
Scientists have delved into the relationship between climate change and human mental health. The researchers found that high temperatures were strongly associated with increases in suicide, violent crime and aggression, emergency department visits and hospitalizations for mental disorders, and death. This is especially true in schizophrenia, dementia, psychosis, and substance abuse groups.
It is estimated that for every 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the risk of death for people with mental disorders, dementia or substance abuse increases by almost 5%. Suicides linked to rising temperatures increased by 0.7 percent, and interpersonal violence, including homicides, increased by about 4 to 6 percent. This phenomenon reflects the profound impact of climate change on society and individual mental health.
Even more worrying is that high temperatures may not only exacerbate emotions such as crankiness and anger, but may also lead to the exacerbation of mental illnesses such as anxiety, schizophrenia and depression. Particularly vulnerable groups include the elderly, adolescents and those with pre-existing mental illnesses, as well as those who are homeless or of low socioeconomic status.
These findings underscore the need to take a holistic view of the effects of global warming. We must not only focus on the damage to the natural environment caused by climate change, but must also pay attention to its impact on human society and human mental health, so as to explore more solutions to global warming.

Four, take a look

  • Lai Jiawei, an individual developer, summarized the process of starting an overseas company through the Internet in China in two weeks. include:
    • Choice of overseas mobile phone number
    • Choice of overseas registration place
    • Firstbase registration and account opening process (company registration place, rented private email address, employer identification number, Mercury bank account opening)
    • Stripe Enterprise Account
    • Wise personal remittance
    • Registration and maintenance costs
      • US mobile phone number $36 per year
      • Firstbase Registration Fee $399
      • Firstbase address mailbox $350 per year
      • Firstbase company agent (including annual report, tax declaration tool) $299 per year
    • Editor’s Note: Not only independent developers of apps, but also many independent bloggers, e-newsletter managers, self-media creators, etc. have potential overseas payment needs. Judging from the process shared by Lai Jiawei, it is a legal and formal way, and apart from the first year’s expenses, the maintenance cost is not high, even lower than starting a company in China.
  • Video Content: How the Economic Machine Works ( Bilibili | YouTube )
    • Editor’s Note: The current domestic economic situation is not optimistic. Judging from the July economic data released by the National Bureau of Statistics on August 15, it was obviously lower than expected. Especially at this time, if you lack common sense of economics, you will easily be misled by some true and false information. This Dalio video discusses how the economy works like a simple machine and is driven by three main forces: productivity, the short-term debt cycle, and the long-term debt cycle. Understanding these forces and their interactions can help track economic trends and events. The video also highlights the importance of credit in the economy and how it drives consumption and debt cycles.
