Extraterrestrial water was found in a meteorite that fell in the UK last year. The 0.5kg meteorite, which fell on a driveway in the town of Winchcombe in Gloucestershire in February 2021, was quickly recovered within 12 hours of its fall, and it was also the least contaminated so far collected sample. About 12 percent of the meteorite sample was made up of water, which is “very, very similar” to the composition of water in Earth’s oceans. Where does the water on earth come from? There are hypotheses that comets or asteroids are the main source. Analysis showed that the meteorite came from an asteroid near Jupiter. It formed about 4.6 billion years ago and took about 300,000 years to reach Earth.
