I plan to travel to the United States recently, and I plan to buy a full-featured American phone card for this purpose. The specific requirements are as follows:
- Support eSim (save card purchase fees, no need to plug and unplug)
- You can make calls, send and receive text messages, and surf the Internet normally while in the United States. After returning home, you can continue to use your original phone number to make calls and send and receive text messages.
- The packages are flexible, the rates are cheap, and you can switch freely at any time
After comparing the rates and services of multiple telecom operators, I decided to choose Tello phone card. Tello offers flexible plans, with the lowest plan offering 100 minutes of calls and unlimited text messages for just $5 per month. This is undoubtedly the most cost-effective option for my trip to the United States. Tello uses T-Mobile and Sprint’s networks, which has wide coverage and guaranteed communication quality. I believe that Tello’s service will definitely meet my communication needs during this trip.
My package choices:
- In the United States: $29/month, unlimited voice calls, unlimited text messages, unlimited data (actually only 25G high-speed data)
- After returning home: $5/month, 100 minutes of calls and unlimited text messages. If the expected call time next month is relatively long, switch to the $6 (300 minutes), $7 (500 minutes), or $8 (unlimited) packages in advance.
It should be noted that the Tello phone card cannot be used through mobile networks in China and must be connected to Wi-Fi to make calls. However, Tello provides a free Wi-Fi Calling function, which can make calls to more than 90 countries and regions through Wi-Fi, including mainland China. At this time, the call time will be deducted from the package. With Wi-Fi Calling, you can continue to use your Tello phone card to make and receive calls even after returning home without incurring additional roaming charges. What should I do if Wi-Fi Calling cannot be turned on? You can use Tello’s APP to make calls. If you are using a dual-SIM mobile phone, don’t worry when it is inconvenient for you to connect to Wi-Fi. Tello can use the traffic of another mobile phone card to connect to the network. When a call comes in, it will automatically use cellular data to provide services. , as shown in the figure:
The Tello phone card cannot roam within the country and cannot use the China Mobile/China Unicom network like Ultra Mobile. It can only use Wi-Fi or cellular networks. The signal shows: Carrier is using cellular data.
If Wi-Fi Calling is successfully turned on, the signal will display: Wi-Fi Calling, as shown in the figure:
Purchase card
To use Tello’s services, first we need to register an account, the registration website is: tello.com , as shown in the figure:
Use my invitation code P3QP11H5 to register, and we can each get 10 US dollars in Tello Dollars (you need to purchase a Tello phone card first), which can be used to offset the monthly rent. As shown in the picture:
After the account registration is successful, we can start selecting packages on the Dashboard , as shown in the figure:
In China, we can use the cheapest package first and click “Configure Plan” to customize the package. Tello’s traffic is not available in China, so we select “No Data” and the call time “100 minutes”, as shown in the figure:
Next, choose to purchase a physical card ($2 USD) or eSIM (free). The physical card can only be sent to US addresses. As shown in the picture:
Since I chose to use eSIM, I found the address on Google Maps . I chose Oregon to reduce the tax. If I chose California, the tax would be US$2.32. This tax is calculated based on your billing address Billing Information. For example, your card collection address Shipping Information can be California, but the billing address Billing Information can fill in Oregon. In fact, the tax at my address is relatively expensive. If I choose Mississippi, the tax is only $0.64, as shown in the picture:
If you have already placed an order, you can enjoy the new tax rate by changing your billing address when renewing next month.
Before placing an order, Tello needs to confirm whether your mobile phone supports eSIM and will ask you to provide the IMEI code. How to obtain it: use your mobile phone to dial *#06#, as shown in the picture:
Enter the obtained IMEI code on tello’s web page, and then click check, as shown in the figure:
If your phone supports eSIM, it will display:
This phone is compatible with Tello network.
This phone is eSIM compatible
If you have already obtained a physical Tello SIM card from other channels, you can directly click I already have a physical Tello SIM card to activate, as shown in the figure:
Payment can be made using a credit card or American PayPal . I usually use an American virtual credit card , as shown in the picture:
After placing an order, you may need to wait for a while, probably for manual review, as shown in the picture:
We can check the status of our order in ORDER HISTORY, as shown in the figure:
After waiting about 50 minutes, the order became “Successful”. After the order is approved, you will be notified by email. At the same time, 10 US dollars of “Tello Dollars” also arrived.

The generated address or the address entered randomly will cause Wi-Fi Calling to be unable to be activated. We can find the real US address on Google Maps. How to find a real US address on Google Maps
After setting the E911 address, turn on the Wi-Fi calling function of the Tello calling card on your mobile phone. Can’t turn on Wi-Fi Calling? You can manually set the Wi-Fi DNS to:
- 199.85.126.10
- 199.85.127.10
Or connect to Wi-Fi first, then hang up the ladder. After Wi-Fi Calling is turned on, you can turn off the ladder and use Wi-Fi Calling to make and receive calls normally.
Renewal
Tello will automatically deduct the next month’s monthly rent from your linked credit card or PayPal. So how to use the free Tello Dollars to renew? You can renew manually, DASHBOARD—>Renew Now, as shown in the figure:
Select TELLO DOLLARS in Payment Methods, as shown in the figure:
If TELLO DOLLARS is not enough to pay the next month’s monthly rent, the difference will be deducted from the bound credit card or PayPal.
User experience
I recently used a Tello phone card (Wi-Fi Calling) to make a call to the IRS to check the ITIN application progress of several customers. The call time started at 10 minutes. The call quality was very good and was never interrupted. As shown in the picture:
The Tello phone card should be my main phone card for making calls to the United States in the future. It provides unlimited calls for $8/month, which is much cheaper than Ultra Mobile.
