What kind of database do we need? PingCAP User Summit: Agile data services become the key

Under the current accelerated digital transformation and rapid changes in the economic situation, coping with the challenges of uncertainty has become an important issue for enterprises. Especially for data-driven enterprises, they are facing severe challenges from data architecture. In this context, what are the trends in database development? What kind of new requirements do users put forward to the database?

On September 22, 2022, the PingCAP User Summit, an enterprise-level open source distributed database manufacturer, was held in Beijing.

At the conference, Liu Qi, founder and CEO of PingCAP, threw out two thoughts: First, how should enterprises deal with increasingly complex data systems? Second, how to support business agility with agile database capabilities?

TiDB has been occupying the first place in the domestic database popularity list for more than two years. What capabilities are hidden behind this? Perhaps you can get a glimpse from this user summit. At the conference, Liu Qi introduced PingCAP’s capabilities in technological innovation, independent open source, ecology and globalization. At the media communication meeting after the conference, Leifeng.com and other media had in-depth exchanges with PingCAP founder and CEO Liu Qi, R&D vice president Tang Liu, and vice president Chen Yuqi .

What kind of database do users need?

At this year’s user summit, PingCAP especially emphasized that it can bring users a more agile business experience. In Liu Qi’s view, a database with low threshold and high efficiency is very necessary for users, and choosing TiDB, an open-architecture data service platform, can manage the complexity of business.

“For database products, ease of use is the basis for large-scale applications. Only by showing sufficient advantages and reducing users’ skills requirements is the basis for large-scale commercial use.” Liu Qi told Leifeng.com.

The road to distributed databases is not destined to be an easy road.

Liu Qi said that a database or even a small database has hundreds of thousands of lines of code or even millions of lines of code. A traditional mature commercial database may require tens of millions of lines of code. The distributed database is a highly complex system, and the combination with the cloud further increases the complexity. The survival of distributed databases depends on managing complexity. In the choice of technical path, TiDB’s open architecture of divide and conquer can manage complexity, so it can become the choice of more users.

From the perspective of the entire HTAP (Hybrid Transaction/Analytical Processing) architecture, the ceiling of the technology itself is very high. In a single system, OLTP and OLAP services cannot be taken into account. HTAP can take into account both transaction and analysis capabilities, so it can well support user business agility requirements.

It is understood that TiDB has been committed to improving the agility of user business. In the past two years, the performance and stability of the product kernel have been continuously improved, making it the choice of leading companies in various industries. The TPCC performance of TiDB OLTP is improved by 200%-300%, the real-time HTAP performance is improved by 200%-300%, and the performance of core scenarios has also made continuous breakthroughs. For example, the core load delay optimization of bank transfers is as much as 4 times, and the logistics and other ultra-high throughput real-time The mixed load performance of online transactions, read and write, has been improved by more than 100%, ensuring a smooth experience for hundreds of millions of users.

TiDB realized the large-scale expansion of online transaction processing as early as version 1.0, laying a solid foundation for HTAP capabilities; version 4.0 realized preliminary HTAP capabilities, OLAP and OLTP partitions were independent and physically isolated; version 5.0 was based on the original HTAP engine The introduction of the MPP architecture further improves the parallel computing and analysis capabilities under massive data, supports the integration of Spark, Flink and other technology stacks under the same architecture, and becomes a distributed database with complete real-time HTAP capabilities, helping enterprises improve the timeliness of key businesses.

Li Dong (Ph.D.) of China Saibao Laboratory believes that PingCAP has achieved an architectural transition through independent innovation technologies such as distributed and cloud, and is a breakthrough way for China’s database industry to learn from and think about.

In the future, PingCAP will continue to explore aspects such as DB microservice, cloud native, and intelligence, and continue to lead the evolution of data services. Among them, DB microservice can realize the service of any separable components of the database, create a PB-level online data service platform, and provide higher scale effects, better fault tolerance and stronger risk control methods.

In addition, in order to make TiDB within easy reach of developers, PingCAP also released Serverless Tier and TiDB Playground at this conference, providing each developer with a free cloud database on TiDB Cloud. The latter allows developers to Quickly experience HTAP in 5 minutes.

“Open source” becomes the basis for PingCAP to gain user trust

TiDB has been open source from the first line of code. In order to ensure the commercial customer experience, the open source version and the commercial version will provide different service support at the service level.

According to Tang Liu, TiDB provides a stable and maintainable LTS (Long Term Service) version for enterprise users. PingCAP has also built a professional service support system, such as a financial architect team, an automatic diagnosis and tuning team, and a customer support team, to escort the business of enterprise-level users.

PingCAP has taken open source as its core strategy since its inception. At present, the TiDB project has gathered 1,895 contributors around the world, covering 45 countries and regions. Among them, contributors other than PingCAP account for more than 75%, of which nearly 20% are corporate decision-makers, covering finance, telecommunications, manufacturing, Internet, logistics and other industries. Open source lowers the threshold of trust and obtains the ultimate user scenarios in a timely manner. The ultimate scenario promotes global community technical collaboration, so that the innovation capability and ecology of TiDB products can be quickly iterated.

In addition, at the summit, PingCAP first published a new book, “Walking with Open Source: Demystifying PingCAP’s Seven Years of Entrepreneurial Practice”, explaining the significance of open source technology and culture for the survival and development of a new generation of technology-driven enterprises. In terms of academics, it has formed academic cooperative relations with more than 250 universities around the world, and has become the exclusive co-organizer of VLDB Summer School for two consecutive years, contributing to the cultivation of distributed database talents in universities across the country.

When asked whether domestic databases are capable of going global, Liu Qi said: “There are more than 500 database vendors in China, but very few are truly competitive and capable of going global. Depending on whether the product is easy to use and whether it improves the business, users will not care about your database benchmarks. From the experience of PingCAP globalization, doing a good job of localization in each place is to do a good job of globalization. It’s not easy.”

It is understood that more than 3,000 companies around the world have chosen TiDB. Whether in gaming, finance, logistics, Internet or intelligent manufacturing and other industries, based on application scenarios such as large-scale OTLP expansion, real-time HTAP analysis, etc., PingCAP’s service users have gradually extended from China to the world, covering Japan, Asia-Pacific, North America, Europe and other regions . Since its official commercial use in May 2022, TiDB Cloud has provided fully managed cloud database services for many users around the world, easily supporting various digital innovation scenarios, and liberating enterprises from complex tasks such as back-end infrastructure operation and maintenance and data backup.

In addition, at this year’s PingCAP User Summit, CCB Jinke, Yum China, Transsion Holdings, Tiger International, Ping An Technology, Bank of Hangzhou, China Life Insurance, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, Neusoft Group, CEC Jinxin, Jiahe Meikang, Digital China , Cloud Migration Technology, Tianyi Cloud and many other heavyweight users have shared the experience of using TiDB.

In the transformation of the key core business of CCB Jinke, TiDB deeply participated in the system upgrade of CCB Jinke, successfully withstood the pressure of more than 40,000 TPS and operated stably. In cooperation with PingCAP, Transsion Holdings has migrated the overall service structure of its mobile store to TiDB, enabling Transsion Holdings to devote more resources to business promotion, freeing up middle- and back-office work, and greatly reducing costs. Tiger International, as a world-renowned international securities company, holds 59 licenses or qualifications in Singapore, the United States, Hong Kong, Australia and other places, and conducts business in many places around the world. Based on globalized business, Tiger International’s data architecture and data security also face the challenges of globalization. TiDB can solve the complexity of the system architecture, and at the same time solve business challenges and data security challenges through low latency and strong data consistency.

PingCAP also announced at the conference that it will join forces with Yum China to establish “Yum China✖️ PingCAP Distributed Database Joint Laboratory”. Jointly created TiDB commercial distribution UbiSQL with Ping An Technology.
