A topic that often causes a lot of debate is which is the best operating system for developing Java applications. This article gives my opinion on this issue.

Java works well on Windows, macOS and Linux distributions.

I work at Chronicle Software, and most of our software is open source Java libraries, so we don’t — or rather, we can’t — require our customers to run on a specific operating system. You might be surprised to hear that we also don’t dictate which operating system our employees should use. We let them use the one with the least friction, the one with the most efficiency for them.

When it comes to settings for developing Java applications, the most important choice is your choice of integrated development environment (IDE), not your choice of operating system. Choosing a good IDE can improve your productivity, but we don’t force everyone in the company to use the same IDE.
