For the past six months, I have been playing NBA2K’s MyTeam mode, which is an online mode where players collect player cards to form their own fantasy team, and then compete with other players.
And I’m probably the most eccentric player in this mode, because I don’t play multiplayer at all. On the one hand I don’t enjoy the pressure of playing against real players, and on the other hand the latency of online matches is high.
So what the hell am I doing in this online mode? I often ask myself this question too.
In the end, I realized that what I liked was not MyTEAM or online games, but simply enjoying the process of building a team.
The core gameplay of MT mode is to draw cards, but different from general card draw games, it also has an in-game economic system. Players can put the cards they obtained in the auction and trade them with in-game currency.
For a player like me who has almost no money, the auction house is an important channel to obtain advanced player cards.
Because the price of players often fluctuates, by picking up leaks in the auction house, buying low and selling high, zero krypton players can even achieve self-made, get rich, and get the same luxurious lineup as krypton gold players.
At almost the same time, I was pushed by my father to try to invest in stocks, and I also bought a few stocks.
I gradually found that 2K and stocks sometimes have something in common, and I gradually understood why many people can study stocks all day long: sometimes with luck, players with higher value from free card packs can make a small profit, then This kind of surprise is almost like picking up money on the side of the road. And sometimes because players lose tens of thousands of dollars overnight, that kind of loss is not worse than the stock crash in reality.
Buying and selling players seems to be more fun than playing games, and I find myself spending most of my time at the auction floor constantly updating the market rather than playing on the court.
Maybe I can play 2K and exercise my financial mind.
However, compared to stocks, player cards are more like futures, which are affected by market supply and demand. Players with strong ability will naturally be priced higher than other players. But if the rarity is low, because the market retention is very high, even if the ability is very strong, the price often cannot be sold at a high price.
The official will release limited-time card packs every week, with newer and stronger players. With the introduction of new cards, old cards are gradually outdated, and their abilities cannot keep up with the times, which will also cause prices to drop rapidly. Therefore, in order to keep the asset from depreciating, you need to constantly update the card in your hand, sell it before it drops in value, and buy a new card with a better value preservation rate.
Officials will also release super packs at the end of each season to increase the acquisition rate of premium cards to lower the average price of the entire market. Many people will sell their cards due to panic price dives, resulting in a sharp drop in value.
On the contrary, if the official launch some time-limited tasks that require specific players to complete, the prices of these specific players will increase dramatically in a short period of time.
Players can profit from these trends if they can predict these trends in advance and buy the dips at the right time.
There are still many ways to make money in the MT mode, such as buying some popular cards on the market, giving them a lot of Hall of Fame badges, and then reselling them – some advanced badges can make some players sell double their worth.
In addition, the rich will always have more room to maneuver and turn assets into investments. Most people make money in the end to buy better players and make their teams more competitive. But I make money purely for the sake of making money. After a few months, watching my assets continue to accumulate and increase, this sense of satisfaction keeps me playing. The real game is more like the process of counting the spoils and optimizing the organizational structure.
Unfortunately, my experience in 2K has not had any meaningful impact on my stock. On the one hand, the stock market uses real money, and the rules are less obvious. On the other hand, even if I’m not doing well in 2K, in a few months 2K23 will be out and everything can start all over again. But my stock is still stuck, waiting for a long-term return.
In fact, I can’t read the candlestick chart, I just drew it by feeling! -CaesarZX
