According to the promotion of the national “dual carbon” goal, the construction of a new power system has become an inevitable trend to achieve energy transformation and the mission of the power industry. The new power system adapts to a high proportion of renewable energy access, adapts to the instability of new energy, adapts to a high proportion of power electronic equipment, adapts to the coordinated operation of smart dispatching of multiple energy sources, and adapts to more flexible active power consumption characteristics. The new generation of information communication and digital technology is deeply integrated. The application of digital twin technology in the power industry empowers smart grids and smart power plants, provides more real-time, efficient, and intelligent service value, effectively promotes the digital transformation of power companies, and promotes the construction of new power systems.

At present, the digital economy has become a hot spot in global development. Countries around the world have proposed digital economy development strategies, and digital twin technology and social and economic development have been continuously integrated and deepened. “The 14th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development of the People’s Republic of China and the Outline of Vision 2035” proposed: “Accelerate the promotion of digital industrialization. Cultivate and strengthen artificial intelligence, big data, blockchain, cloud computing, network security, etc. Emerging digital industries.” The “14th Five-Year Plan for Digital Economy” issued by the State Council listed digital twin technology in “accelerating the promotion of digital industrialization” as a strategic strategy for enhancing the innovation capabilities of key digital technologies and strengthening the supply of superior technologies. The forward-looking new field is also the field of innovative technology integration that is a key breakthrough in the “14th Five-Year Plan” period.

This white paper first analyzes and expounds the application value of digital twin technology in the power industry from the perspectives of production, education, research and application combined with the characteristics of the power industry. It introduces the application status and typical applications of digital twin technology in the power industry, and sorts out the common problems and application trends faced by the current development of digital twin technology in the power industry, and puts forward strategies and suggestions for the next construction and implementation.
