Monthly (No. 22): The Happiness of the Present This article is a record and reflection on life from May to August 2023.
I have been busy on the weekends recently and the update has been interrupted. Thank you for your attention:
The title of this article comes from Omer Khayyam’s “Rubaiji”: “Enjoy the happiness of the moment, because this moment is your life.”
PS. I have always positioned the articles in the monthly magazine as “self-talk”. Only articles with satisfactory dialogue results will be edited and republished on the blog. So please bear with me if this article ends up being messy, as I’m not sure I’ll be able to make this issue clear with just one article. In addition, if readers find that the article may contain preaching, please ignore it; if so, then this part should be my preaching to myself.
The sense of meaning that you can’t ask for Has it been a long time since you felt happy?
Living in today’s environment, people’s sense of meaning is often associated with anxiety. Pursue the meaning of life, find the value of existence, and finally come to a conclusion that is nothing more than “work hard”-thus constantly squeeze your energy and time to pursue output, practicality, and fulfillment, and define the meaning of your life in Under “effort anxiety”.
It’s like sailing against the current in life, if you don’t advance, you will retreat. Under this kind of pressure, it is difficult to calm the heart, and it is difficult to completely let go of the heart to realize what happiness is; while another part of people chooses to lie down completely and give up chasing the sense of meaning in order to get rid of “effort anxiety”; Then keep doing sit-ups between inversion and lying flat. (As for how to maintain a balance between life and work, this is another big topic. The perfect solution to this problem has something to do with everyone’s life rhythm, so I won’t talk about it for the time being.)
In the past, I would feel that the happy moments after study and work were always accompanied by an inexplicable sense of guilt. Of course, this was not intentional, but the teachings of praising suffering in various aspects when I was a child-“Today’s hardship will make you feel sad.” Harvest sweetness in the future, but if you feel sweetness today, you will definitely experience bitterness in the near future.”
After thinking about it, people will only be afraid when they deviate from their own hearts, which will give birth to anxiety and guilt.
What we are afraid of is not being able to face ourselves calmly;
What we fear is to spend our lives in mediocrity;
What we are afraid of is not getting a sense of meaning.
A leader said to me: “If one’s heart is full, then even selling sesame seed cakes in one’s life is a valuable life.”
After thinking about it, these words are not encouraging birth, nor are they making me compromise on the environment and destiny. If you try your best and find that your destiny is really irresistible, then recognize it-“The fact is so sad, not everyone can achieve success, some of us are destined to find the meaning of life in the daily bits and pieces significance.”
Even so, don’t forget “the courage to be willing to be ordinary”.
If the general environment cannot be changed, if the destiny cannot be fought, then the only thing left for human beings to be free is their own attitude towards life. As the saying goes, “everything can be taken away, except for one thing, the last freedom of human beings – to choose one’s own attitude in the current environment, to choose one’s own way.”
This reminds me of a sentence I saw in an interview behind the scenes of “Spiritual Journey”: “Achievement does not lie in external definitions, it all depends on whether you live according to your own wishes.”
Then the solution to this problem lies in the “happiness of the moment”, specifically in two ways:
Cherish every present moment Perceive the happiness in life Cherish every present moment Human beings exist one by one at different moments. The reason why a person becomes a human being is because he exists. In other words, as Adler said: “Life is a series of moments, the most important thing is this moment.”
We must know that the present moment is only the present moment, there is no past and no future—regrets about the past and worries about the future are the biggest enemies affecting our life and work, and the culprits that destroy our sense of happiness.
We often regret the path we didn’t choose, and we often think that if I didn’t choose this way at the time, would the current result be better if I took another path?
However, everything is actually unknown. “Restarting Life” jokingly expressed the ending of the so-called “best choice”. Even if restarting life continues to try to take another path, looking back, it may not be the original choice. Sopia in “Finding Paradise” said: “Human life is too short to accomplish everything we want to do. No matter what we do, there is always something else worth trying, there is always another road worth taking .So in the end, what we can and must do is to be satisfied with the path we have chosen.”
You must know that there are no ifs in reality, what we have is only one moment at a time, and the choice made at this moment is the best no matter what the result is.
Cherish the moment, cherish this moment, cherish everything around you. It is my sincere hope that all people will learn to feel these moments and not let them slip by.
The first thing to know about the joy in perceiving life is that joy constitutes happiness in our life and nothing else.
In a stressful environment, I prefer some lightweight emotional outlets. Perhaps the simpler, purer, and plain things can purify the soul. I especially like to read the articles pushed in “Daily Douban”. There are always some people in the strange Douban group who like to share the happy things around them:
Many times, it seems that subconsciously, happiness is not a serious matter like work and study. Therefore, I will arrange work and study every day, but I will not arrange happy things very much. But sometimes I still do random happy things, such as learning to sing favorite songs, practicing guitar, watching movies, writing a diary, looking up recipes to make my favorite dishes, making milk tea and other drinks, lying on the window sill in a daze (watching clouds, watching buildings) the elderly and children under the sun), read books related to recent problems, etc. ——Luo Tiantian likes to look at the sky, watching the clouds rolling and spreading, watching the sunset glow change color, it is very relaxing. Recently, the sky in Dali is full of colorful auspicious clouds. I am really happy to see a little bit after waiting for an evening today. I also like to let the sunlight shine on the books through the curtains to read a little bit, the light and shadow are mottled but I am very happy. You can tidy up the room and sort it into categories, and clean up unnecessary things, which will be very healing. ——Romantic children are able to perceive the joy in life is an enviable ability, but this perception itself is very rare. In the article “Talking about the value of existence and life experience”, I once wrote that “sensitivity determines the boundary (contour) of perception of the world”. “Demian” also constantly emphasizes the importance of perception – “As long as he has no perception of it, he is just a tree, a stone, and at most an animal. However, when this perception begins to flash the first At a gleam of light, he becomes a human being. Perhaps not all two-legged animals that walk the streets are human in your eyes, although they can also walk upright and have children. You I understand in my heart that most of them are still the generation of fish, sheep and insects, and how many people live like mole crickets! Of course, everyone has countless possibilities to become human, but only he understands the existence of these possibilities, and even realizes them consciously. When these possibilities, he really owns them.”
So how do you develop this perception of pleasure? In summary, there are four ways:
Slow down, cultivate focus, lengthen your horizons, and always be kind. 1. Slow down and grab your attention from the ever-changing outside world, and don’t be attracted by the explosion of information from the outside world. You need to pay more attention to your heart and how you feel every day. Writing a diary is a good way-“Recording happy and happy experiences and reliving that good feeling can make people happier. Writing down bad things and writing them in a vent style can vent painful emotions and help restore mental health.” In ” WJ.19: The Significance of a Diary” has written about the benefits of a diary, so I won’t expand on it here.
Our life only really exists when we slow down and pay attention to it. At the same time, we pursue high efficiency so that we can slow down and experience life instead of losing life.
Nothing is more important than sleeping well, being happy, and being healthy.
2. Cultivate concentration “How to Cope with Difficulties in the Heart” says: “When we really use all our physical and mental resources, we perceive an apple, a tree, a person, a thing with the curiosity of “what happened?” When we experience changes in our own muscles, temperature, heartbeat, breathing, etc., we will instantly enter a state of “ecstasy”, and thus experience tranquility, peace, and unconscious joy. “
When we devote ourselves wholeheartedly to what we are doing, immerse ourselves in the feedback and feelings it brings to us, and experience every moment of the moment—the state of mind in this state of flow will be peaceful, There will be any worries and worries. This is a particularly comfortable state. You will feel integrated with the world, time seems to have stopped, your heart is filled with satisfaction, and you can truly feel your own existence.
3. Extend our horizons. Our life belongs to us. Every minute and every second we spend is our real life. If life can’t be spent in the way you like, isn’t it a waste of life? What’s the point of all this?
Looking at it from a longer perspective, life is very broad. Maybe most people are ordinary, but no one is mediocre. All have the same origin and mother, we come from the same abyss, yet everyone is running towards their own destination, trying to jump out of the abyss. We can understand each other, but the only one who can understand ourselves is ourselves.
Everyone is different, and everyone’s life is a journey to self, an attempt on a path, a silent call of a path. People have never been able to exist in the form of an absolute self. Everyone is trying to find and become an absolute self. In this process, some people are dull and some are more insightful, but all of them are in their own way. Choose the way you like to spend your life and experience life more, then every moment at the moment will be happy.
There are not so many big problems, you need to be so tense every day, and you are so nervous. There should be some unexpected good things in life, which will be sent to us by some accident.
As for people, as long as you see through the pretense of this world, the world will be yours.
4. Always be kind This point was also mentioned in the article “Talking about the value of existence and life experience”, but at that time it was analyzed from the perspective of establishing a connection, so I won’t repeat it.
Here I would like to introduce the Buddha Gautama in “Siddhartha”. He is familiar with the impermanence and illusion of human nature, but still loves deeply and devotes his life to helping and teaching the world. “In the heart of this great teacher, things are loved more than words. His deeds and life are more important than his laws. His manners are more important than words. His greatness is not in his laws or thoughts, but in in his life.”
Recognizing the great wisdom of Gautama, Siddhartha said, “For me, love is the first priority. It may be the business of a thinker to examine the world, explain it, or despise it. My only thing is to love the world. Not to despise the world, not to hate the world and myself, but to gaze upon all that exists and myself with love, wonder and awe.”
I think that if we can achieve this state of life, have love for the world, and be kind to all things, then every moment of life will be the purest happiness.
I have experienced a lot of things in the past two months, and it is the most difficult period since I started working. I will omit the process and details. I was in a state of anxiety and unhappiness, but I have adjusted back (this is also The reason for choosing the title of this issue “Happy Now”). Here are some moments recorded.
