WordPress Theme Team Contributors Oppose Proposal to Improve the Visibility of Block Themes in the Directory

Seven weeks ago, contributors to the WordPress theme team came up with several ideas for improving the visibility of block themes on WordPress.org. These include the possibility to change the popular topics algorithm to display block topics more prominently, and/or add a new “block” menu item next to Popular and Latest on the topic directory home page. The directory is going through some growing pains, as site editor compatible themes are the only ones that have access to everything WordPress has to offer in the new block paradigm. However, the 94 available block themes represent less than 1% of the directory’s 9,761 themes. This is an interesting period in WordPress history, where user-chosen themes can greatly limit utilization
