Albert Bierstadt was a German-American painter known for depicting the lavish, expansive landscapes of the American West. He took part in several journeys of westward expansion (the movement of immigration, agriculture, and industry into the American West in the 19th century), painting his famous scenes. Bierstadt made his first trip to the Rocky Mountains in 1859 and then to California in 1863 with his friend, author Fitz Hugh Ludlow. Both were impressed by the magnificent scenery. Ludlow published his assessment of the scenery in the June 1864 issue of The Atlantic, declaring that the waterfalls of California’s Yosemite Valley surpassed the Alps and the bluffs of the Himalayas. Bierstadt wrote that he had found the Garden of Eden. Popular speaker and preacher Thomas Starr King extols the virtues of Yosemite and sees those who paint its landscapes as artist priests.

Effectively combining his studio practice abroad with his ability to sketch outdoors, Bierstadt successfully nurtured a market for Western painting in the East. He painted a small oil sketch of the work in his New York studio the year after his trip to Yosemite, possibly his first subject, and sold it for $1,600 at the Metropolitan Hygiene Show in New York , which is the highest price for a work for sale. Small paintings like this have the freshness of doing research in the field, and also provide inspiration for the work the artist has conceived and painted on a large scale in his studio.

Happy Monday everyone!
