The immortal Ishtar Gate in Babylon is undoubtedly one of the most impressive monuments during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar; it is 12 meters high and decorated with glazed tiles, marking the long access to the temple located in the city center. Beginning of the long parade avenue. The construction of Istar Gate went through three stages. The majestic boulevard leading to the Ista Gate, about 250 meters long, dates back to the final stages of construction. It is flanked by thick walls, with slightly protruding towers at regular intervals. The gates and towers on both sides of the road are decorated with glazed tiles. The Istar Gate features dragons and bulls, symbolizing the god Marduk or Adad, the weather god; the towers adjacent to the road are decorated with lions, a symbol of the goddess Istar. Between 1898 and 1917, the Deutsche Orient Group, led by Robert Johann Coldwey, excavated Istamen. Parts of it are now on display at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin; the animal reliefs are reconstructed from original bricks. This relief also belonged to the Rijksmuseum in Berlin before it was acquired by the Kunsthistorisches Museum in 1930, thanks to them for sharing this work with us.
Side note: We discuss the story of this magnificent relief in detail in our ” Masterpiece Stories ” series. <3
