When you hear the last names of our artists today, you might think Monet? Is that Monet? In fact, Blanche Hoschedé Monet was both Monet’s stepdaughter and Monet’s daughter-in-law. Sound complicated? Let me explain.
Blanche Horsched is the second daughter of Ernest and Alice Horsched. Ernest was a businessman, he was a giant of a Parisian department store. He collected Impressionist paintings and was an important patron of Claude Monet’s early career, which also made them friends. In 1877 Ernest Horsched went bankrupt and his art collection was auctioned off. Then Ernest, his wife Alice and their six children moved into a house in Vétheuil to live with Monet, his wife Camille and their two sons (Jean and Michel) . However, Ernest spent most of his time in Paris and ended up in Belgium. After Camille’s death on September 5, 1879, Alice and her children continued to live with the Monet family. They moved to Poissy in 1881 and finally settled at their home in Giverny in 1883. While Ernest and Alice Horsched never divorced, Claude Monet and Alice lived together until Ernest’s death in 1891. Claude Monet and Alice Hosschild were married on July 16, 1892.
In 1897, Blanche married Claude Monet’s eldest son, Jean Monet. The above is the complex story of the Monet family. Most of her work was done in Giverny between 1883 and 1897, many similar to those of Monet, also near Rouen. She took on an almost pure Impressionist form, as evidenced by the painting we show today. Blanche also assisted Monet in painting, who had trained and encouraged Blanche to become an artist.
