Software problems that led to the firing of VW CEO Herbert Diess underscored the importance of software to the auto industry . Serious software development issues have delayed the scheduled launch of new Porsche, Audi and Bentley vehicles. Diess’s hard-line leadership style has made him increasingly isolated, and he has repeatedly clashed with labor leaders in his push to transform the company into an electric-vehicle leader, warning that he was losing to Tesla and needed to cut jobs. But problems with Cariad in the software department eventually cost him support. Problems with the Cariad have delayed the launch of important new models, including an electric version of the Porsche Macan, Audi’s new Artemis range of electric cars has been delayed by two years to 2027, and ultra-luxury brand Bentley may not go fully electrified by the end of the decade. Tesla CEO Elon Musk says software is the key to the future in response to Diess’s firing.
