According to a study published in the journal Science Immunology, researchers at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital have developed a new antibody that neutralizes all known coronavirus variants , including Omicron, in laboratory tests. The researchers hope that the antibodies will have the same effect in patients. The antibody, called SP1-77, works in a unique way against the new coronavirus. The new coronavirus gradually enters the human body by binding to the ACE2 receptor. When it binds to the ACE2 receptor, it needs to complete the final step: fusing its outer membrane with the human cell membrane, thereby opening the door for infection. The study found that the SP1-77 antibody prevented this step from being done. If the discovery can be replicated in humans, it could lead to better vaccines and treatments.
