Japan declares war on floppy disks

Japan’s digital minister Taro Kono, who has vowed to rid government agencies of outdated tools, announced a war on floppy disks on Twitter. Floppy disks have been used as a storage medium for fifty years and have long since been phased out in most countries, but in Japan there are about 1900 government processes that still require floppy disks. Taro Kono said it would evaluate the procedures to eliminate floppy disks as soon as possible, and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has expressed support. He says floppy disks are hard to come by these days. Japan isn’t the only country working to phase out floppy disks, the Pentagon announced in 2019 that it would stop using floppy disks in nuclear arsenal control systems. Most young people today have probably never seen a floppy disk and probably won’t recognize it at all.
