Opus, a widely used audio codec project, faces patent challenges . Opus was designed from the outset to eschew existing patents and levy no royalties on all users. Its patents are licensed under open source compatibility and royalty-free. Its patented technology was standardized by the IETF in 2012 with RFC 6716. But now a company called Vectis is collecting patents to try to levy royalties on hardware devices that use Opus, and the company’s plans don’t target open-source software, applications, services or content.
