UNIDO: Industrial Development Report 2022 (with report)

The impact of the new crown epidemic on the world has surpassed any crisis in recent history. The new crown epidemic has brought an unprecedented impact on the world, surpassing any crisis in recent history. A flu-like illness that broke out in a limited area in the fall of 2019 quickly became an unstoppable shock wave that changed every aspect of human daily life around the world. From work to business and socializing, all human activities are affected by this new crown epidemic and its prevention and control measures.

But the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been uneven across countries. However, the socio-economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has varied widely across regions and countries, reflecting profound and fundamental differences in countries’ resilience to extreme events. As countries prepare for the future, it is important to understand which manufacturing policies are working and which are not. This ambitious goal requires a re-examination not only of the types of response measures taken in the early and mid-phase of the Covid-19 pandemic, but also of the structural features that shaped those measures and had far-reaching consequences.

The Industrial Development Report 2022 sets out a series of new insights in this regard from four aspects. To this end, the first part of the Industrial Development Report 2022 explores four important issues in depth in the following order:

• Existing structural factors affecting national resilience (Chapter 1) • Industrial support from business and government (Chapter 2)

• Megatrends likely to shape the future of industrial development (Chapter 3)

• Policies to support an inclusive, sustainable and resilient industrial recovery (Chapter 4)

Chapter 1: Getting Ready

This chapter first analyzes the salient features of the crisis, the differences in its impact, and the ways in which it affects industrial production. One aspect that this chapter focuses on is the critical role that existing industrial capacity plays in supporting broad socioeconomic resilience, thereby mitigating the impact of COVID-19.

CHAPTER 2: EXPLAINING BUSINESS AND GOVERNMENT RESPONSES

Against this backdrop, Chapter 2 delves into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global manufacturing companies and the key factors supporting corporate resilience and response. The report also describes the responses governments have taken to support the industrial sector and mitigate the impact of the crisis.

Chapter 3: Looking to the future

Chapter 3 assesses the prospects for the future of industrialization, taking a broader view of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global manufacturing, taking into account other megatrends that are redefining the global industrial production landscape. The main contribution of this chapter is to analyze the extent to which the Covid-19 pandemic is likely to accelerate these trends and the resilience factors needed to better prepare for the future.

Chapter 4: Rebuild Better

Chapter 4, the final chapter of Part One, explores policy options for an inclusive, sustainable and resilient industrial recovery. Like any other harrowing experience, we should also view the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to learn lessons and rebuild better in order to be better prepared for similar future events that will deliver on the UN’s 2030 Availability The Sustainable Development Agenda as the main guiding direction for leading the industrial recovery.

Part II of this report complements this analysis with additional industrial statistics. Part II of this report complements the analysis in Part I, providing more detailed evidence from a variety of industrial statistics, including industrial production, trade , employment and competitiveness indicators. This section also explores the significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic to collecting industrial data.
