A doctoral student delivering food

Since graduation, the main channel to understand the various dynamics of the school is CC98. Around the end of March, someone posted a hit on CC98, probably saying that a doctoral student from Zhejiang University became famous because he delivered food in his spare time. It seems that at that time, the news of doctoral students delivering food was also trending on Weibo. At the time, I just thought that it was probably someone who was bored and created topics to gain traffic from colleges and universities, so I didn’t read the specific details of this news in detail.

At the beginning of May, a classmate posted that the doctoral student opened a Douyin account and posted something that was detrimental to the school’s image every day, hoping that relevant colleges and teachers would pay more attention to the doctoral student’s situation. At that time, I only read the post a few times when I was fishing at work, and did not carefully read how other students viewed this matter. A few days later, someone posted another post. This person made a statement, saying that he was the one who delivered the food. If he wanted to explain the matter clearly, you could ask him any questions—this is a very new thing. , the party actually posted it himself. Of course, this kind of thing was very attractive to me, who likes to eat melons. At that time, I was in the May Day holiday and was bored, so I clicked in and read his posts carefully.

In the title of his post, he introduced the name of his Douyin account – “Deliveryman Meng Wei is reading a blog”. He then provided a screenshot of his user homepage to prove he was who he was. In Douyin’s personal profile, he stated that he is a student of Zhejiang University Control College (School of Control Science and Engineering), and both undergraduate and doctoral studies are in the control college, and he is currently in the extension stage. He also specially marked the major of the college as a double first-class A+ subject. This is presumably to show his personality. When I saw this, my first thought was, it turns out that this person is from the Control Academy. I thought it was someone who came in from a school outside the school. There are still such strange people in the Control Academy? Both the Institute of Control and the college I belong to are the colleges of the Department of Information Science, which are equivalent to brother colleges, and the courses they study are similar. I also know a lot of students from the Control Academy, and I also know the counselors of the Control Academy. It’s hard to believe that this kind of unbelievable thing happened in the court.

Then I looked back at his username and avatar. This man was called “Meng Wei”, and his avatar was a picture of him sitting in the CCTV studio. Meng Wei, Meng… Wait… I suddenly realized something, I knew a person named “Meng Wei”, it was not a coincidence. I tried to think back to this man I knew named “Meng Wei”. He was a part-time counselor for the freshman class I was in charge of when I was working in the seniors group during my sophomore year. He also won the title of “Top Ten College Students of Zhejiang University” that year. Before graduation, he posted his high-paying offer as an algorithm engineer position in a certain company. I am very envious of his success and admire his excellence. At that time, I often told my friends about this senior. But after graduation, he actually never posted any QQ space or circle of friends. I tried to make sense of this phenomenon: maybe he blocked me, maybe he removed me from his friends list, or maybe he just stopped showing off his life.

I looked at the Douyin screenshot again, zoomed in to see his avatar, opened Douyin to search for his account, and watched a few videos he posted. One of the videos is of him eating in the cafeteria, and he missed his face in that video. His avatar, his video… No way, I just popped out three English words – What the Fuck? I hurriedly searched for “Meng Wei” in the WeChat friend list, and saw his avatar and his WeChat ID, which were exactly the same as Douyin. This person is actually the person I know!

This was definitely the thing that shocked me the most that day. I always thought that he had successfully graduated and had a bright future. I really can’t equate the senior in my impression with the person in front of me who has been delayed for three years and has begun to rot. This is too absurd!

So I found the popular post back then, carefully browsed the comments of my classmates, and watched all the videos posted by the seniors on Douyin… I was very emotional. At the beginning, he won countless honors, and he put a lot of effort into obtaining these honors, which is true. But as a doctoral student, to graduate, you also need to have academic achievements. The academic lack of research results is not to say that it can be made up for through countless social work. Obviously, he often showed off his various awards and certificates in the circle of friends back then, just to make himself an elite. I still remember when he was awarded the title of “Top Ten College Students of Zhejiang University”, he said that in the next ten years, his goal was to be awarded the title of “Outstanding Alumni”, which seemed impossible to achieve.

Don’t forget your own job. As a PhD student, my job is to devote myself to exploring my own research field. When you have spare time, you can focus on the student work that is just icing on the cake for yourself. I don’t know what happened to him in the three years he was in Yanbi, but I can never hide the fact that he is incompetent on the grounds that there is a problem with his mentor. Maybe there is a problem with your mentor, but everyone else in your peers can graduate, but you will never be able to climb the mountain in front of you. Is this because your chosen goal is too lofty? All the classmates suggested that he transfer to a master’s degree, but he refused because he was unwilling to give up the time he had spent all these years, and he was unwilling to give up the resounding title of Ph.D. But I think, sometimes, you need to choose to give up. See the facts in front of you. If you only get a certificate of completion in the end, you won’t even have a graduate diploma. Then only the undergraduate degree certificate is left, is this worthy of the eight years of my time? Moreover, he chose to get married the year before Yanbi, and now has a child. Such behavior, as a student, as a husband, and as a father, seems extremely irresponsible.

This is a tragedy, but it has also become a laughing stock among classmates.
