Phoenix Net Technology News Beijing time on December 7th, Apple CEO Tim Cook (Tim Cook) confirmed on Tuesday that Apple will manufacture chips in the United States for the first time in nearly a decade. This is a key step for the company to reduce its reliance on Asian manufacturing.

On Tuesday, Cook, along with U.S. President Joe Biden and executives from other chip companies such as AMD, attended the equipment move-in ceremony of TSMC’s Phoenix plant under construction, symbolically moving the first batch of equipment into the new $12 billion facility. On the factory floor. Cook said in his speech that Apple will expand its cooperation with TSMC when the TSMC US factory opens in 2024. Currently, TSMC is already producing chips for Apple.

“As many of you know, we partner with TSMC to manufacture the chips that power our products around the world,” Cook said. Expand this work.”

Cook said that the self-developed chips used in most of Apple’s devices will be produced at the Phoenix factory. “Thanks to the hard work of so many people, these chips can be proudly stamped ‘Made in the USA,'” Cook said. Initially, TSMC’s Phoenix factory will only produce a small number of chips for Apple, using technology that may not be as good as that needed for the company’s 2024 flagship device.

Meanwhile, TSMC on Tuesday projected that the company’s planned two chipmaker factories in Arizona could bring in $10 billion in annual revenue when they open.

“When the two fabs are completed, we will produce more than 600,000 wafers per year, with an annual revenue of US$10 billion, and product sales for customers of more than US$40 billion,” said Liu Deyin, CEO of TSMC.

TSMC said on Tuesday it had more than tripled its planned investment in the factories to $40 billion. The first fab will be operational in 2024, while a second nearby facility will produce advanced chips in 2026. (Author/Xiao Yu)
