Australia advances climate change bill

The lower house of Australia’s parliament has passed a bill to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 43 per cent by 2030 relative to 2005 levels. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the shift put the country “on the right side of history”. The country had been a laggard in climate policy for years under former Prime Minister Scott Morrison. Morrison has waved a lump of coal in Parliament to declare his Liberal Party’s firm support for the coal and gas industries, despite Australia’s catastrophic bushfires and floods during his tenure. The upper house of the Australian parliament is expected to pass the bill within weeks. Australia, the world’s third-largest exporter of fossil fuels, has long been criticized for ignoring the harmful effects of climate change. The legislation marks an important step forward in reducing emissions in Australia.
