Baidu has released the Apollo RT6 , an L4 self-driving car, and the company hopes to launch its driverless taxi service in 2023. The new car is priced at around $37,000, roughly half the $71,000 price of the previous version of the car with a regular steering wheel, released in June 2021. Robin Li, Baidu’s co-founder and CEO, said at the company’s annual technology conference that driving a driverless car in the future will be half cheaper than it is now. With the cost down, Baidu will be able to deploy tens of thousands of self-driving cars across the country, he said. Baidu says the new system, which requires no driver in most situations, integrates eight lidar sensors (a detection system that uses pulsed laser light) and 12 cameras around the body. Chinese law requires self-driving cars to have a steering wheel, but if the rules change, the steering wheel can be removed, which would provide more room for extra seats and other entertainment equipment such as game consoles, the company said.
