Li Ruyi launched a poll in the Telegram channel: Which one is your outlook on life closer to . As of now, the voting has not ended, and the result I see is that 566 people participated in the voting, 38% of them chose “death is worse than life”, and 62% chose “be free or die”. I launched the same polls in Mastodon and WeChat; the voting time limit was set short, and the number of people who participated in the polls in both places was only a few dozen people. But looking at the existing voting results, the results are very different:
Voting results on different websites; WeChat applet on the left, Mammoth on the right.
After launching the vote, I received a lot of feedback that this voting option is not comprehensive, there are only two options, what should I do if I want to choose the third one. In fact, the description of the vote has made it very clear that you are choosing an option that is closer to your outlook on life, and you do not need to be asked to make a precise and comprehensive description. And, on second thought, are there really other options? Free or die can actually be seen as a refinement of XX or die. If you think that there is nothing that you would rather die once you lose, then this outlook on life should be described as better to die than to live; conversely Say, if you have something that you are willing to risk your life to guarantee that you can never lose it—you know, protecting such things from being violated is actually a freedom that you need to defend—that is, of course, freedom or death.
There are also such questions in the comments and private messages received: How many people can choose not to be free or die, and under what specific circumstances, would they really choose to sacrifice their lives for justice? The implication is that voting doesn’t seem to make much sense if it doesn’t exactly correspond to behavior; I don’t think so. A simple vote is not a life-or-death situation, but a reminder to think about this issue that may have been overlooked first, and then make a choice. Even if you misjudge your firmness in your beliefs, it makes sense to make choices and confirm your views. Because we have confirmed that there is a bottom line that we must never give in, we are more prepared to say no when necessary.
It can be seen that when I write this content, I have preset which options should be selected, which I do not deny. How to choose is everyone’s freedom, but I suggest everyone to ask: What exactly does freedom mean here. When the city was closed without advance notice, we said that it is better to die than to live; when the community was closed with barbed wire, we said that it was better to die than to live; when our emotions were depressed and singing the national anthem was banned, we also said that it was better to die than live. To live; but what can we say when we are forced to die in a corner where no one can see, hear or hear?
It’s a bit difficult to shout that you will not be free or die. It is of course even more difficult to be able to hold the bottom line of being free or die, and to say no when necessary. But precisely because it is difficult, it deserves to be regarded as a belief! Look at the voting data above, even in WeChat, the results can be seen at a glance. I am sure someone will stand by me when I say no.
