Someone has done an experiment: a person is holding a weight of 3kg in both hands. At this time, when a weight of 100g is added to his left hand , he will not feel much difference between the two until the weight of the left hand is added to 600g . It feels a bit heavy ; if both hands are holding a 10kg object, then only when his left hand adds a weight of more than 1kg , he will obviously feel the weight difference between the two sides. That is to say, the heavier the original weight, the greater the amount must be added later to feel the difference. This phenomenon is called Beber’s Law .

Beber’s Law reveals a ubiquitous social psychological phenomenon, that is, when a person experiences a strong stimulus, his immunity to such stimuli will be greatly improved— in terms of psychological feelings, the first big stimulus Will make the second small stimulus trivial. For example, if something that was originally 1 yuan suddenly becomes 10 yuan, we will definitely feel unacceptable ; but if the original 10,000 yuan computer has increased by 100 yuan, we will not have much reaction.

From “Beber’s Law”, we can deduce an iron law diminishing happiness. Simply put, the more you get, the less happiness you feel . The same piece of bread brings a completely different sense of happiness to a poor man who is hungry and a rich man who is full all day long not because of the difference in the total amount of happiness they get, but because of the two people’s ability to feel the happiness of a piece of bread no the same.

As explained by “Beber’s Law”, when a person is in a poor state, a little thing may make him excited ; but when the environment gradually becomes superior, people’s requirements, desires, etc. will be excited. As it goes up, the ability to feel happiness is greatly reduced. Therefore, many times, when we don’t feel happiness, maybe happiness is still around, but we just lose the ability to feel it in our hearts.

There is a fable in France: a king led his army to fight, but the whole army was wiped out. In order to avoid the pursuers, he separated from his subordinates and hid in the ravine for two days and two nights without eating a grain of rice or taking a drop of water. Later, he met an old man who was chopping firewood. Seeing that he was pitiful, the old man gave him a vegetable dumpling made of coarse grains and dried vegetables. The hungry king devoured the cabbage, which he thought was the best food in the world. So, he asked the old man, what is such a delicious food called, and the old man said it was hunger .

Later, the king returned to the palace and ordered the chef to make “hunger” according to his description, but no matter how he did it, he didn’t have the original taste. For this reason, he sent people to do everything possible to find the old man who can do “hungry”. Unexpectedly, when the old man brought him a basket of vegetable dumplings, he couldn’t find the original deliciousness.

What really made the king feel happy was not the vegetable dumpling, but his “hunger”. When you are hungry, you can eat leftovers and bad rice with relish ; when you are full, even delicacies from mountains and seas are hard to swallow. This is the truth revealed to us by Beber’s Law .

The ancient Roman philosopher Seneca once said: If you are not satisfied with what you have now, then even if you have the whole world, you will not be happy.

Someone once conducted a happiness survey, asking people from different social classes: “Do you think you are living a happy life?” Among the interviewed people, 80% felt that they were not happy, and they all complained in one way or another . , dissatisfaction and complaints.

Are there really so many people who are unhappy? In the final analysis, in fact, many people gradually lose the ability to perceive happiness. In the process of satisfying one desire after another, I was in such a hurry that I forgot the beauty and hardship of the perception process how can I be happy without perception?

Happiness is not an entity, but a feeling. How much happiness we can get depends only on our sensitivity to happiness. Those who are content are always happy. Always remind yourself: as long as you know how to feel with your heart, happiness must be by our side.
