Bao Yungang, a researcher at the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced the development of RISC-V and the RISC-V open source processor “Xiangshan” of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the report of the conference. According to reports, Xiangshan’s second-generation Nanhu architecture is planned to be taped out in the first quarter of 2023, with a target of 14nm 2GHz. It is expected that the SPEC 2006 score will reach around 20.

Bao Yungang said that Xiangshan is currently the highest-performance open source RISC-V processor core in the world. At present, the development goal of “two cores” of Xiangshan classic core and Xiangshan high-performance core has been determined.

The classic core is based on the second-generation Xiangshan (Nanhu) engineering optimization, benchmarking against ARM A76, and provides CPU IP cores for industrial control, automobile, communication and other pan-industrial fields; the high-performance core is based on the performance improvement of the third-generation Xiangshan (Kunming Lake) , benchmarking against ARM N2, providing high-performance CPU IP cores for data centers and computing power facilities and other fields.

It is understood that Xiangshan’s first-generation core “Yanqi Lake” was taped out on July 15 last year. Based on the 28nm process, the bare chip area is 6.6 square millimeters, the single-core L2 cache is 1MB, and the estimated power consumption is 5W.

Ni Guangnan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, once pointed out that the current CPU market is mainly monopolized by x86 and Arm architectures, and China wants to break this situation and achieve independent control. The open source RISC-V architecture will be a great opportunity and development direction.
