Google and Meta fined 100 billion won in South Korea for illegally collecting personal information

Google and Meta were fined 69.2 billion won and 30.8 billion won, respectively, for collecting personal information in South Korea without users’ consent and using it to deliver personalized ads online . The Korean Personal Information Protection Committee met on the 14th and made the above decision. The committee also ordered the two companies to collect and use information about their users’ behavior on other companies’ platforms, they must notify users in advance, so that users can easily and clearly understand the situation and exercise their discretion freely. This is the first penalty decision made in South Korea for the collection and use of user information by an online advertising platform.
