Google has announced a new policy that effectively bans all call recording apps from the Google Play app store. The Google Play support page states, “The Accessibility API should not be used for remote call recording, nor should apps make such requests to the API.” The policy goes into effect on May 11, 2022. Google’s rationale for banning call recordings is unclear, and many jurisdictions require the consent of one or more parties to a call to allow recordings, but recordings will be legal once the requirements are met. The phone app for Google Pixel smartphones, Google Phone, supports recording in several countries, and it doesn’t provide a suitable API to allow third-party developers to compete with it in those countries.
