Greenland ice sheet melting difficult to reverse

Greenland ice sheet melt is difficult to reverse, according to new research published in Nature Climate Change Any increase in water runoff will raise sea levels by at least 274 mm . Using climate data from 2000 to 2019, the researchers calculated changes in ice sheet volume and area that Greenland’s ice imbalance has already caused . Under either future climate scenario, the loss of mass from the Greenland ice sheet would lead to a loss of 5,900 square kilometers of sea ice, equivalent to a loss of 3.3 percent of its ice volume, raising sea levels by at least 274 mm.
