Hackers make John Deere’s tractor run Doom

At the Def Con security conference in Las Vegas, security researcher Sick Codes demonstrated running the Doom game on a tractor display made by John Deere. Sick Codes said the whole process took several months, including jailbreaking the Linux system used by the John Deere 4240 tractor . Doom running on a tractor is of course specially modified, the scene is set in a corn field, and the player controls the tractor to destroy the enemy. He developed and demonstrated a new jailbreak method for John Deere’s tractor to gain root access to the system. This method may help farmers bypass soft locks to repair tractors themselves. Sick Codes said the method currently used is quite complex, and that simpler exploit methods may be developed in the future.
