After the Franco-Prussian War, Claude Monet, who was in exile in London during this period, went to the Netherlands immediately. He and his family stopped at Zaandam, a town near Amsterdam popular with tourists. “A painter can do it all his life,” he wrote to his friend Camille Pissarro. When Paris was in ruins, Monet painted happy landscapes. The soft light of summer glitters on picturesque houses, reflected in the water on the banks of the Zaan River. Monet captured the carefree atmosphere of this idyllic place with his Impressionist brushstrokes.

Thanks to the Stadler Museum , we present today’s work.
