Introduction to "Cyberpunk 2077" derivative works

For “Cyberpunk 2077” (Cyberpunk 2077), August 20th is a very important day. It is so important that many people, including the author, think that this day is likely to be used as the expansion pack “Phantom of the Past”. Liberty), because on August 20, 2023 in the game world—it is also today in the real world, the headquarters of Arasaka, the core participant in the corporate war, was blown up by tactical nuclear weapons, and Night City (Night City) ) was disastrously affected and many people died, including the rock star Johnny Silverhand who participated in the attack on this Arasaka Tower.

In the world view construction of the board game “Cyberpunk” series and “Cyberpunk 2077”, this nuclear explosion played an extremely important role, because it was not only the watershed of the fourth corporate war in the game, but also a milestone for “Cyberpunk 2077”. Johnny in Burpunk 2077 has left an important mystery, and the game and related peripheral works are constantly retelling and reflecting on this incident. On this important day, “Shadows of the Past” will be released on the 26th of the next month. As a member of the series who loves this series, the author always feels that he wants to do something, so this article about “Cyberpunk 2077” was born. The works are sorted out by the article.

Most of these derivative works are set in Night City, showing us the lives of the small characters in Night City, as Cullen Bunn and Miguel Valderrama, authors of “Cyberpunk 2077: Trauma Team” (Cyberpunk 2077: Trauma Team) Said that these small stories are just the “tip of the black iceberg” in Night City, but at the same time, connecting players (and readers) with these small characters makes the game worldview “more believable”.

Bartosz Sztybor, CDPR’s Comic and Animation Narrative Director, mentioned in an interview that most consumers do not trust this kind of linkage and derivative content, and there is a stereotype of taking advantage of this opportunity to make money, but both Bartosz Sztybor and CDPR have a common The goal is to create high-quality works not only for the fan base, but also for the general reader/viewer. As the release of “Shadows of the Past” is gradually approaching, the author would like to introduce a batch of derivative works of “Cyberpunk 2077” to you based on my personal experience. Players who have been immersed in it, even friends who have not yet stepped into Night City, can establish a connection with the characters in these stories. In Night City, V is not alone.

Note: This article does not constitute any purchase advice; since the official translations of some of the following works are unknown, for the sake of consistency and easy retrieval, this article will mainly use the original titles of the works.

  • Chinese version: Tiandi Publishing House, Ninja Cat (Translation)

“Cyberpunk 2077: Where’s Johnny” is a comic work co-launched by CDPR and Dark Horse. It was first launched as an electronic version in September 2020 with the promotion of “Cyberpunk 2077” jointly launched by CDPR and Rockstar Energy Drink , and then released in October 2021. The hardcover edition will be published on March 27, and the Chinese version will be released in 2023 with a different cover.

The story of the manga, which predates the game’s release, is generally flatter. It tells an event that coincided with Johnny Silverhand’s blasting of Arasaka Tower. The main character, Wallace, is an investigative reporter for WNS News Corp., bent on uncovering the truth through , Wake up the public to bring down the corrupt and powerful corporations in Night City. After seeing Wallace’s TV report, the mysterious forces sent him a mission to retrieve Johnny’s body at the explosion site of the Arasaka Tower. Think about what you can and should do.

It is worth mentioning that the phrase “Where’s Johnny” that is all over the game itself actually has rich cultural connotations: it is the name of the 55th episode of the HBO original drama “The Sopranos” (The Sopranos), which was broadcast in 1999. The name is a nod to Johnny Carson’s “The Tonight Show” (The Tonight Show) (The Tonight Show)’s bombastic opening line “Here’s Johnny”, later in Stanley Kubrick’s movie “The Shining” (The Shining) The terrifyingly famous line “Here’s Johnny” is also a nod to that opening line.

True to its title, Cyberpunk 2077: Trauma Team tells the story of Nadia, a Trauma Team employee who, on her first assignment back to work, encounters an unexpected people, and need to make a choice about life and death, faith.

Through this comic, readers can learn more about the working model and operation mechanism of the trauma team. In the game, players encounter Trauma Team members in the first important mission, they are fully armed, and they seem to be able to do anything for the benefit of the client, which is frightening; but in this comic, Trauma Team members never A symbol changes into a living person, and we see their pain, contradictions and struggles through this story. The author Cullen Bunn revealed in an interview that he considered a kind of contradiction when designing Nadia. When she is in the two situations of “unable to save the person she wants to save/must save the person who is not worth saving”, she will what happened? The experience of watching Nadia also often reminds me of the mood when I make choices in certain tasks in the process of playing “The Witcher” (The Witcher) series and “Cyberpunk 2077”.

According to Cullen Bunn , this work will not be associated with specific events in the game, “whether readers have played the game or not, they can enjoy this story.” He also mentioned that “this is a dark, heavy story” that “focuses on a relatively small but very dark event in a huge world”, which is similar to the design logic of some missions in the game. This work also discusses some core themes in the game with readers, such as social class differences, conflicts of values, alienation and cheapization of people, and how a mortal should face huge power, oppression, injustice, and inequality , nightmarish lingering memories, and indelible pain.

Trauma teams can sacrifice everything for the medical needs of platinum members, but who is going to heal trauma team members?

2AM – She Calls / Midnight Suspicion

Introduction to "Cyberpunk 2077" derivative works

  • Genre: Fiction
  • By Tomasz Marchewka
  • Get: Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam
  • Chinese version: There is a Chinese version, the translator is unknown

2AM – She Calls is a short story that was released with the game on December 10, 2020 as an exclusive bundled bonus for the Steam version of Cyberpunk 2077 .

The story of this work took place in 2071. The protagonist Frank (Frank) used to be an NCPD policeman, and now he is in the business of driving a combat taxi. After meeting the Super Dream star Ora “Di” Dominguez, Frank was accidentally involved into an investigation into gang loot.

This work is short and powerful, but it presents us with a wonderful detective story. Murder cases, conspiracy theories, outsider former police detectives, persistent belief in solving crimes, very simple but unexpected answers, these elements are all included in this work, it is not difficult to remind us of many noir movies or detective movies/episodes . At the same time, this work supplements information about gangs, NCPD, MacTac and other forces, especially involving the organization that is mentioned many times in the game but rarely described in detail.

Cyberpunk 2077: Your Voice / Cyberpunk 2077: Your Voice

Introduction to "Cyberpunk 2077" derivative works

  • Genre: Manga
  • By Aleksandra Motyka (author), Marcin Blacha (author), Danijel Zezelj (illustrator)
  • Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
  • Domestic Publishing: Tiandi Publishing House, Bell in the Reverse Direction (Translation)

“Cyberpunk 2077: Your Voice” is a comic work, which is a digital special code of “Cyberpunk 2077”. Players can go to the official website to log in to the GOG account and read it. On June 23, 2021, Dark Horse Comics released the paperback version of this comic, and the 2023 Chinese version of “Cyberpunk 2077: Your Voice” has a different cover from the original.

The authors of this book, Aleksandra Motyka and Marcin Blacha, are also the script authors of “Cyberpunk 2077”, and Aleksandra Motyka has also created many derivative comics of the “Witcher” series of games before.

The story of “Cyberpunk 2077: Your Voice” takes place in Night City in 2023. It tells the story of Todd (Todd), an employee of the Night City rail transit company NCART, who meets a woman from the Maelstrom gang. Earth wears an inserted chip and encounters a series of dangerous events.

The outline of the story is somewhat similar to “Cyberpunk 2077: 2AM – She Calls”, right? But unlike the hardcore style of the short story introduced before, the overall atmosphere of “Cyberpunk 2077: Your Voice” is more lonely and gloomy. What’s more unusual is that, compared with other works, “Cyberpunk 2077: Your Voice” is closer to the main line of “Cyberpunk 2077”, and the timeline is also earlier, making this comic more like the main storyline Anecdotal works, similar in nature to “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, 2016” and “Star Wars”, allow us to witness the stories of small people behind well-known historical events, and even The story of such a small person is enough to change the course of history and make people sigh.

In the story, not only the behavior of the protagonist inserting the chip makes readers think about it (of course, the ending is also very unexpected), but the timing of the story is also important enough. As a derivative work, it is no surprise that this work also undertakes the role of completing the world view, completing the background information of Zetatech, the Vortex Gang and some technologies, so I won’t go into details to prevent spoilers. “Cyberpunk 2077: Your Voice” is one of the works that I like very much among all the derivative works that have been released so far. Reading this comic on the official website is also accompanied by background music. I hope players will not miss it.

Cyberpunk 2077: Big City Dreams

Introduction to "Cyberpunk 2077" derivative works

  • Genre: Manga
  • Authors: Bartosz Sztybor (author), Filipe Andrade (illustrator), Alessio Fioriniello (illustrator)
  • Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
  • Chinese version: no

“Cyberpunk 2077: Big City Dreams” is a comic work, as an exclusive bonus of the GOG version of “Cyberpunk 2077”, it was launched on November 19, 2020, and players can find the online reading entrance in GOG’s game library , on January 12, 2022, from Dark Horse Comics in hardcover .

As mentioned earlier, the author Bartosz Sztybor is CDPR’s comic and animation narrative director. According to his interview , he took the production of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” as an opportunity to cooperate with CDPR and producer Rafał Jaki. After being the narrative director of CDPR, he more or less exists in the derivative content creation of “Cyberpunk 2077” and “The Witcher” (including but not limited to comics, film and television, board games, etc.), among which comics should be influenced by him One of the most influential, and “Cyberpunk 2077: Big City Dreams” is a comic directly written by him.

“Cyberpunk 2077: Big City Dreams” tells the story of two people who are connected by a Braindance and misfits in Night City: life in Night City is full of fear for street gangster Mirek, who has a lot of money. Time was spent in the Mewtwo experience full of sensory stimulation. By chance, Mirek encountered a touching and “atypical” Mewtwo: a story of ordinary life in a rural farm; On the other hand, in order to live an ordinary and happy life, this family paid the price of handing over their private memories and being recorded as Mewtwo. Now, because of inconsistent expectations for future life, this family is falling apart.

Compared with other works, the story of “Cyberpunk 2077: Big City Dreams” seems a little flat, but it discusses and reflects on some important issues with us in detail. Chaomeng, this concept has been mentioned many times in “Cyberpunk 2077”, but it actually allows players to experience less time. It mainly presents some bridges that allow players to enter Chaomeng to solve puzzles; and in this comic , the author stood on the two sides of Chaomeng’s subject and viewer and narrated: On the subject’s side, their lives are reminiscent of “The Truman Show” (The Truman Show, 1998), there is no privacy, life One of the purposes of Mewtwo is to serve the viewer; on the side of the Mewtwo audience, most people in Night City watch Mewtwo for thrills, but Mirek is clearly an outlier who wants a peaceful life in Mewtwo , Experience some delicate emotions.

In the game, Mewtwo is controversial. There are a lot of content on separate chips discussing about Mewtwo experience and Mewtwo creation. “Cyberpunk 2077: Big City Dreams” is not the only derivative work about Mewtwo. But this work goes deep into the moral and ethical issues of Chaomeng creation, the issue of entertainment to death, etc., which inevitably makes people feel that it alludes to the current content creation and entertainment industry, and even the game creation itself.

Bartosz Sztybor said that one of his creative ideas is to start with topics that the author himself wants to know and can be touched. One of the cores he wants to discuss in the “Cyberpunk 2077” comics is: “The world of cyberpunk What will your family look like?” Therefore, this work naturally touches on the focal topics in contemporary life, the understanding of family life, happiness, joy, satisfaction, and freedom, the huge gap between reality and expectations, whether dreams can be realized and the price, etc.

As a special comic of the game, this work vividly shows the essence of Night City. Just like the comics say, Night City (and real life) is a highway, which cannot slow down or turn around. So, each of us (and V) How to find the exit of the highway, how to find a solution to the problem of “living your true self”?

Cyberpunk 2077: You Have My Word

Introduction to "Cyberpunk 2077" derivative works

  • Genre: Manga
  • Authors: Bartosz Sztybor (author), Jesús Hervás (illustrator)
  • Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
  • Chinese version: no

“Cyberpunk 2077: You have My Word” is a comic in collaboration between CDPR and Dark Horse Comics, which will be launched digitally in four issues from April 28, 2021 to November 16, 2022, and then in March 2023 A paperback edition containing all four issues was released on the 21st.

This work tells a story that is very similar to the “John Wick” (John Wick) series, with a sense of vengeance and vengeance: the heroine’s family has undergone an accident, prompting her to avenge blood in Night City. With the development of the story, readers will peel off layers of conflicts, and deepen their understanding of the complex system of Night City through the confrontation between individuals, gangs, and corporate forces.

“Trust” is a core element around the plot of the comic. The line “You have my word” is repeatedly presented through different characters. Be trustworthy” or “who can be trusted”, and experience the absurdity and cruelty of Night City, which is finally controlled by the company.

Cyberpunk 2077: Blackout

Introduction to "Cyberpunk 2077" derivative works

  • Genre: Manga
  • Author: Bartosz Sztybor (author), Roberto Ricci (illustration)
  • Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
  • Chinese version: no

Cyberpunk 2077: Blackout is the third Cyberpunk 2077 comic series from Dark Horse. This work will be updated in four parts on a monthly basis from June 1, 2022 to September 6, 2022, and will be released in paperback by Dark Horse Comics on January 4, 2023. This work is also written by Bartosz Sztybor.

“Cyberpunk 2077: Blackout” is another comic about Mewtwo. The story took place in 2077, corresponding to the task of “The Heist” (stealing goods) in “Cyberpunk 2077”. Coincidentally, this comic also tells a story of “stealing goods”. The main character, Arturo, is a maintenance worker at the media giant DMS and possesses extraordinary editing skills in Mewtwo. On the one hand, Arturo is a “company dog” who helps DMS sell “dreams” to all walks of life in Night City through Chaomeng. On the other hand, Arturo seems to be an idealist and altruist, with an inner desire to improve The impulse of the world around him, this kind of inconsistent life gradually became unbearable for him, and Arturo once tried repeatedly on the verge of self-destruction. In the end, the oppression of reality, the call of self, and the encouragement of people around him turned into a majestic motivation for him to change the variables in his life and rush towards unknown new results.

As the most “cyberpunk” of all derivative works, this work raises several questions for readers: first, about “karma”, this book asks readers whether the misfortunes of life are people’s fault or not. It is self-inflicted, does everyone need to be responsible for their own unhappy life, does the poor person have something to hate, and whether there is a more powerful thing that dominates people’s lives in the dark; second, about “choice” , if there is a powerful and unshakable force leading the tragic cycle called “karma” and “self-inflicted”, then how should everyone face it, whether to let it sink or rise up to resist, is there a kind of It can break the cycle and change the appearance of the world, even a little bit; third, about “life and death”, where does the tendency to seek death in the low tide period come from, how to deal with it, and when the god of death called “retribution” finally comes , how to face it.

These “cyberpunk”-flavored issues make this story even seem like a super-small sister chapter of “Cyberpunk 2077”. Bartosz Sztybor mentioned his understanding of the cyberpunk worldview: “Sztybor believes that cyberpunk is not necessarily a tragedy, but under this worldview, people have to face all kinds of hard-to-shake enemies, such as consortiums and harsh environments. Therefore, it is difficult to get a role without losing it under such conditions.”

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners / Cyberpunk

Introduction to "Cyberpunk 2077" derivative works

  • Genre: Animated Series
  • Chief creators: Rafał Jaki (original story), Hiroyuki Imaishi (director), etc.
  • Distribution: Netflix
  • Production: TRIGGER

The 10-episode online animation jointly produced by CDPR, Netflix, and TRIGGER was first released in June 2020 during the live broadcast of “Night City Wire” and was directed by Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann). , “Kill la Kill”, “Little Witch Academia”, “Promera” and other works are in charge of production.

The original story of this animation took place in 2076, a little earlier than the main line of “Cyberpunk 2077”. “(Sandevistan) prosthetic body, the story after “Divine Power Addition”──Join a mercenary group and try to create your own world in Night City. The situation of the protagonist David in the story is somewhat similar to that of the protagonist V in the game. Both of them started at the bottom of Night City, dreaming of conquering Night City and becoming a famous person. In the process, Night City Then he mercilessly retaliated with the “thorns” that hurt the body and mind.

“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” introduces many important elements and concepts in the game, such as the Arasaka Corporation that players are familiar with, and Cyberpunk, which is mentioned many times in multiple separate chips and tasks, but has not been clearly explained ( Cyberpsychosis) and so on. “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” continues the confrontation pattern of forces and classes built in the game. The city scene design is also highly consistent with the game, which can give gamers a sense of familiarity when revisiting the old place, and can also arouse non-players. A certain role of interest in Night City; after the animation was broadcast, the game also updated the linkage task “Over the Edge” (edge walker) and a new weapon, which further strengthened the bond between the animation and the original.

“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” retains TRIGGER’s consistent style in terms of audio-visual experience: unique art, rough brushstrokes and full of dynamic tension. The author himself is the main producer of this film such as Hiroyuki Imaishi, Tetsu Amamiya, and Igarashi Kai. Long-term followers of TRIGGER, the above-mentioned animators have contributed quite a lot of impactful images to this work; however, on the other hand, the narratives of many of TRIGGER’s past works are often simple, abstract, and highly entertaining, and this work is no exception. Although CDPR has been deeply involved in the supervision, such as delineating the direction and principles, providing development resources such as modeling and sound effects, and giving opinions on character shaping, compared with the game itself, the final appearance of “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is lively and noisy, as if However, it fell behind in its insight into Night City (and the cyberpunk worldview). It is difficult to arouse deeper resonance and thinking beyond the general feeling of the plot itself.

“Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” also quoted the popular song “I Really Want to Stay at Your House” from “98.7 Body Heat Radio” in the game, which set off a phenomenon-level popularity and drove a large number of Cover and recreate. “I Really Want to Stay at Your House” was created by Rosa Walton, one of the musicians of the duo Let’s Eat Grandma. When I mentioned this song, I would like to recommend Let’s Eat Grandma’s live performance this year . But I have to say that as a game player, the animation production team’s reference to the track makes me feel a little weird: in the animation, the track has become a way of expressing the emotions between the male and female protagonists, while in the game the radio station has already accompanied the player too much. Too much time, carrying too many players’ feelings about the game plot and Night City, the production team’s hastily quoted always makes people feel a bit above the players’ feelings, after all, “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” is only about Martinez’s story, and we players are not Martinez.

All in all, this animation has obvious entertainment attributes and a clear boundary with real life. These series of features are somewhat different from the game itself and the concept of cyberpunk. Although all the animators are working hard in this film and showing their strengths, as far as the work itself is concerned, the positioning of this animation may be more inclined to attract audiences to become game players of “Cyberpunk 2077”, and some game players may Feeling a bit boring about this.

Cyberpunk RED

Introduction to "Cyberpunk 2077" derivative works

  • Genre: Board Game
  • By Mike Pondsmith
  • Publisher: R. Talsorian Games

“Cyberpunk 2077” comes from the “Cyberpunk” board game series created by Mike Pondsmith. The first game in the original board game series “Cyberpunk: The Roleplaying Game of the Dark Future” was published in 1988. Two years later, the rules and content were changed. The upgraded “Cyberpunk 2020” is released; with the release of “Cyberpunk 2077”, in order to bridge the timeline of “2020” and “2077”, “Cyberpunk RED” came into being. Strictly speaking, this work is not a derivative work of “Cyberpunk 2077”, but considering the nature of its prequel, this article still decides to include it.

Pondsmith once mentioned in an interview with IGN that if “Cyberpunk 2020” is compared to “Star Wars”, then “Cyberpunk RED” is basically “The Empire Strikes Back”, and “Cyberpunk 2077” is “Return of the Jedi”. “(Should refer to the first three films of the “Star Wars” series released successively).

“Cyberpunk RED” simplifies the rules of “Cyberpunk 2020” to a certain extent (affecting damage determination, weapons, economy, etc.), making it easier to use, and includes a large number of stories during the transition period between “2020” and “2077” , including rich text and high-quality art, it is convenient for interested players to go deep into the terrible situation of Night City and the surrounding world. If you still feel that it is difficult to get started, players can also choose the more simplified “Cyberpunk RED Jumpstart Kit”, which further reduces the size while maintaining the integrity of the overall structure.
