The civil case of Jingyao Liu v. Liu Qiangdong will be heard on October 3 in Hennepin County, Minnesota. In August 2018, Liu Qiangdong was arrested by the police for allegedly sexually assaulting Jingyao Liu, a 21-year-old student at the University of Minnesota (now a graduate student at the University of Washington), and was released the next day. In December of the same year, the Hennepin County Procuratorate decided not to prosecute Liu Qiangdong on the grounds of insufficient evidence. In April 2019, Jingyao filed a civil lawsuit, listing Liu Qiangdong and JD.com as defendants, seeking compensatory and punitive damages. Judge Edward T. Wahl granted compensatory and punitive damages claims against Liu Qiangdong and granted compensatory damages against JD.com, but dismissed the punitive damages motion, according to a memo made public this week. Jingyao’s attorney, Wil Florin, previously said , “…the Hennepin County jury will hear the facts of this case. We are optimistic that when the jury sees the full picture, the jury will think Jingyao was harmed. What happened in Hennepin County in August 2018 was hurt, and when the whole thing happened, how did the powerful use the media to slander her.” For the trial, the court accepted Liu Qiangdong’s claim and rejected the media’s application for live broadcast. But live text is allowed.
