Mozilla.org 25th Anniversary

On January 20, 1998, Netscape began a major layoff. Two days later at 8:00 AM, Netscape issued a press release announcing that it would release the source code for its browser by the end of March. The news came as a complete surprise to the rest of Netscape’s employees. Jamie “jwz” Zawinski registered the domain name Mozilla.org on January 23, 1998 at 9:00 pm. The rest is history. According to the CVS records of mozilla.org, the website was first launched on February 27, the 0.90 draft of the Netscape Public License was released on March 6, and the source code was officially released on March 31.
