Around 1900 Amsterdam ushered in rapid development. Trade and urban sprawl have brought the city back to life after a long period of stagnation. The main artists of Dutch modernism who were active in the city at the time, such as Georg Hendrik Breitner, Isaac Israel, Piet Mondrian (you can view their Works) and Leo Gestel, creating a beautiful picture of a city embracing modernity with new momentum. Shimmering paint shades bring the city to life in every way.

In this watercolor by Leo Gerstel we see Rembrandtplein. Rembrandtplein is one of the largest squares in Amsterdam, and people gather to drink on one of the terraces.

In Gerstel’s work, we can see the way the Impressionists saw the world. If you want to learn more about this pioneering group of French artists, check out our French Impressionist Super Course .
