Playing games doesn’t hurt mental health unless the player has to play instead of wanting to play

A survey of nearly 40,000 gamers by the Oxford Internet Institute team found that gaming does not harm mental health unless the player has to play instead of wanting to. The researchers found no causal link between any type of gaming and poor mental health. The games the researchers investigated included casual game Animal Crossing: New Horizons, racing game Gran Turismo Sport, online competitive games Apex Legends and Eve Online. Study participants consented to the researchers’ use of their game data. The researchers found that games did not negatively affect players unless they felt compelled to play.
