Propaganda defeated by facts

The figure skating men’s singles champion Chen Wei at the Beijing Winter Olympics, although he is also a Chinese, is treated very differently from the newly promoted “Chinese” Gu Ailing, and has been neglected and attacked on the domestic Internet. The reason is also very simple, because he insulted China.

In recent years, the threshold for insulting China has become lower and lower. Even with the four self-confidences promoted by the ruling party, the hearts of the little pinks are still broken like glass. Or the little pinks are overconfident, and the whole earth has to turn in the direction indicated by the boss.

Judging from media reports, Chen Wei’s humiliating behavior has two aspects: first, he chose the music of the movie “The Last Dancer” at the 2018 Winter Olympics; second, he responded to human rights issues in China.

What kind of movie “The Last Dancer” is, and why it touches the sensitive nerves of the little pink people, this arouses my interest. A search on the Internet shows that the film is based on Li Cunxin’s autobiography of the same name. It involves politically sensitive topics such as Jiang Qing and the Cultural Revolution, and it is only natural that it should be banned in China.

I don’t like watching movies, so I found a book to read. The cover is quite in the style of the Cultural Revolution. At first glance, the red background sets off the bust of the author in green military uniform. This book is written in English, but it does not have too complicated vocabulary and grammar, even if I am not good in English, I can understand it.

This book tells about the author’s own life, which can be roughly divided into three parts: childhood life in the old village, when the Cultural Revolution was happening; study life at the Beijing Dance Academy, ushering in the end of the Cultural Revolution; The exchange life, and the trajectory of life after choosing to stay in the United States.

For those who have lived in the countryside since childhood and have a little knowledge of the history of the republic outside of middle school history textbooks, the author’s depiction of the times in his personal life is not new, but it is different for foreign readers. After all, their impression of China is still unknown in which year.

For Li Cunxin, who has suffered from poverty since childhood, living a good life is a natural wish. When he first saw the wealthy life in the West in the United States, the communist education and propaganda he had received over the years inevitably collapsed like a high-rise that had been hit by a missile. Especially when the Minister of Culture rejected his application to visit the United States for the second time, and was unwilling to even give him a chance to meet for a few minutes, the party’s good propaganda must have been a piece of bullshit in his heart.

The CCP’s propaganda used to be very powerful, especially in the early years, even after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, it was able to attract Taiwanese students to return to China, not to mention domestically. Pity now, the external propaganda has become a laughing stock, and the internal propaganda is also full of loopholes.

Li Cunxin’s story tells us that no matter how subtle propaganda is, it is vulnerable in the face of facts. This is what the great leader called “seeking truth from facts.”

So how to make your own propaganda seamless, you can only hide the facts and obliterate history. The ancient emperors could fool the people, but today the people can no longer be fooled. They can build walls, just like the walls of Maria, Rose and Sheena in “Attack on Titan”.

Today, however, is different, and while the Internet makes it easier for people to be monitored, it also makes it easier to record history and preserve the truth. Even if someone wanted to reverse the train to 1984, it was already a time when it was impossible to go back.
