Read more good books, think more, communicate more with excellent

Talking about investing with a friend over the weekend, he told me:

Bought the Wealth of Nations and found that Adam Smith understood these (questions) 250 years ago.

I just saw a few words from a netizen a while ago, and I just turned it around and replied to my friend:

  1. 90% of the social problems you think about, at least 1000 years ago, the sages gave the answer.
  2. The remaining 10%, philosophers, thinkers 300 years ago must have given the answer.
  3. There are absolutely no questions you think about, and thinkers throughout history have not given answers.

Therefore, most of the time, your thinking is in vain before reading a book.

I don’t quite agree that our thinking before reading a book is futile, but I do agree with “read more good books”.

Ali’s Dr. Xiao Lihua once proposed in “High-Quality Deep Learning Experience Expands the Width, Height and Depth of Life”: What are the main methods and paths for learning and growth? He concluded:

  1. Read thousands of books
  2. Walk Wanli Road
  3. Know all kinds of people
  4. Famous teacher guidance
  5. own perception

This includes “reading” and “thinking”.

I also think that you should find good people to communicate more. Everyone has their own weaknesses, and good people may have complementary weaknesses. As Dalio said in the book “Principles”:

Find the smartest people who disagree with me so that I can work hard to understand their reasoning.

Find other independent thinkers who share a mission with me but see issues differently than I do. By engaging them in a well-thought-out debate, I was able to understand their reasoning and have them stress-test my reasoning. We can all reduce the likelihood of our own mistakes in this way.

This shifts the mindset from thinking “I’m right” to asking yourself “How do I know I’m right”.

No wonder the Analects say:

No friend is worse than oneself.

To sum up, it is to read more good books, think more independently, and at the same time communicate more with excellent friends and ask for advice.
