The September newsletter is here.

I spent a lot of time offline this month and read less online, which is good. This corresponds to the fact that the blog has updated 8 articles. It is a relatively frequently updated month, and the contents are all daily records. I listened to some podcasts, because I commute to Shanghai and Hangzhou every week, and the highway is suitable for listening to podcasts.

The following is the content of this issue.

☆ “The tree is like this” – Bai Xianyong

Most of Bai Xianyong’s collection of essays are articles written after the age of 50, recalling his former relatives, teachers and friends. I marveled at his memory, how he could remember so many past events, and go into great detail, even the layout of the block, every flower and every grass, was clear and clear. I have read too many instrumental articles and commentaries. Read these narrative articles to cure anxiety.

☆ “The Quest for Destiny: A Brief History of Chinese Numerology and Methods of Acting” – Lu Zhiji (not finished)

It is a very highly rated fortune-telling history book, but it actually also introduces the fortune-telling method in detail, which is concise and wonderful. However, the contents of fortune telling are very complex, and it takes a lot of effort to remember and apply them all.

Fortune telling is essentially building a model. The input is a person’s birth date and the output is a person’s life destiny. If a person’s destiny can really be described, and historians already have so many people’s life data, can they really find a correlation with their horoscopes? It’s also unknown.

I only take cash. My knife has never been put to use. Most people who meet me have money that is not worth mentioning compared to what they actually own. They may not even know that I have prepared a knife. My craft seems to be somewhere between begging and robbing, and there seems to be no word that can accurately define it.

I said: “I don’t know, I don’t live for the answer.” She held the teddy bear in her arms and said: “Then what are you doing for?” I said: “I just live and see if interesting things happen.” will happen.”

☆ Reader 202317/Grandpa’s 12 calendars

Grandpa passed away in 2015, almost 8 years since he left us. Before the Spring Festival in 2023, my grandma passed away in her sleep.

When sorting out grandma’s belongings, I found a big bag deep in the cabinet. Out of curiosity, I flipped through it and found that there were more than a dozen of my grandfather’s calendars inside. The earliest calendar was from 1990, before I was born. The most recent one was in 2014, the year before my grandfather passed away. The calendars are all worn out and yellowed, some are even scattered, and many of the dates are missing. But this is the place where my grandfather recorded every moment of his life and mood during his lifetime. It is extremely precious to me.

Grandpa recorded many daily chores on it. The calendar in 1991 recorded something related to food stamps: “In exchange for food stamps, 70.5 kilograms will be carried forward from the previous year.” It was also the first time I learned from my grandfather’s calendar that they had to pull coal by themselves at that time. One day my grandma recorded: “Today the old man and I pulled 240 kilograms of coal.” When I see this, I will be curious, why do I have to pull so much coal? Sometimes I almost shed tears unconsciously while watching. One of the entries is from the diary on February 19, 1995. Grandpa wrote on the calendar: “Today is my 64th birthday. My wife and I celebrated it alone. We ate a bowl of egg noodles in the morning. It was very bland. I caught a cold. I’m recovering.” There is another article from December 20, 2006, where my grandfather recorded: “Today is my wife’s birthday, spend it in an ordinary way.” Seeing this, I feel that I have a deep love for my grandparents. Apologies and regrets.

☆ Reader 202307/boring little things

On a quiet afternoon in a sunny room, don’t read a book or listen to music, just watch the sun shine in from the window. There was dust flying in the air, people were chatting, running, and children laughing downstairs. It doesn’t matter if it’s summer or winter, who cares? Anyway, there is sunshine and a short period of time for us to waste as much as we want. I don’t know since when, we have been chased and spurred by time non-stop. Hurry up, hurry up! Let me squander this afternoon that only belongs to me, stop myself from walking too fast, and wait for the soul that is still running crazily behind.

Photo Wall Since I said goodbye to the compact camera, I rarely print photos. Probably because I am a very nostalgic person, so I always feel that the photos on my mobile phone or computer do not have the same texture as when I hold them in my hand. One day, I spent an afternoon selecting 100 photos that I particularly liked, developed them, then selected them one by one, and carefully posted them on the wall. As a result, this wall in our house became the most beautiful scenery in the house. When friends come to my house, they will stop and admire it for a long time. If they find a photo of themselves, they will be extremely happy. After this wall was imprinted with time, it became the wall with the most stories.

Scarecrow Two crows stood on the branches and looked around, and saw a scarecrow standing in the wheat field at their feet. Crow A asked Crow B in fear: “Is that a person?” Crow B said disdainfully: “Don’t be nervous, it’s just a scarecrow.” Crow A: “How do you know?” Crow B: “Didn’t you notice? ?He didn’t look at the phone.”

I have a classmate who plays games. She just graduated from college, and her mother gave birth to a little brother. He ran to ask his dad: “I’m already so big, why do you still want a smaller one?” His dad looked at him, thought for a moment and said, “It’s just like when you play a game. If you lose practice with the big size, you must I want to play on a trumpet.”
