“Summer” on New Year’s Day? Extremely warm winter hits Europe

Over the weekend, a winter heat wave broke temperature records in many European countries, and ski resorts in some areas were even forced to close because there was no snow. Specific data show that at least seven countries recorded their hottest January 1st ever, including the Netherlands, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Belarus, Latvia and Lithuania. Meteorologists and climatologists alike have been alarmed by the unseasonably warm winter weather, saying Jan. 1 broke too many records to count, noting that nighttime temperatures in some areas were even in line with summer. | Related reading (Financial Association)

If extreme weather occurs, the factors behind it can be explained by existing science, but it is not so worrying. However, the hot weather in Europe this time is difficult to explain, which is puzzling and worrying. Maybe scientists are not capable enough, or supernatural phenomena have appeared. Fortunately, this kind of weather appeared in winter in the northern hemisphere, and it did not have a serious impact on people’s survival and life. If it was the extreme high temperature in summer, it would be fatal.

Regarding the harm of global warming, in fact, it is far from enough to rely on the appeal of scientists. What is needed is the consensus of the government, entrepreneurs and even individuals. At present, major countries have formulated plans for carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, but the consumption of fossil fuels has a great relationship with economic development. If it is because of the reduction of such industries, new industries have not yet been able to shoulder the burden of economic growth and employment. At the time, I believed, these goals were just rhetoric.
