Currently, ramping up production at the Berlin and Texas Gigafactories is Tesla’s top priority. Earlier, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that because the production of these two factories is difficult to increase, “it is becoming a huge melting pot of constantly burning cash.”

At the Texas factory, Tesla faced bottlenecks in the production of 4680 cells and structural battery packs; at the Berlin factory, Tesla did better, producing the Model Y with 2170 cells.

Earlier this month, Tesla confirmed that its Berlin Gigafactory had produced 1,000 Model Y units in a week, a major milestone for the company. However, Tesla is now experiencing setbacks as many Model Y buyers report delays in deliveries of orders. Some buyers said they were told by Tesla that the problem was with the drive unit (the motor), though the issue appears to only affect the high-performance version of the Model Y.

It is reported that the motor of the Model Y produced by Tesla’s Berlin factory comes from the Shanghai factory. Tesla’s goal is to transfer all the production of Model Y to Germany, but during this period, the company still relies on the supply of the Shanghai factory.

According to communications between Tesla and buyers, Tesla has suspended deliveries of the Berlin-made Model Y due to a defective motor. Some consumers with close delivery dates have seen vehicle deliveries delayed, and those buyers with delivery windows have also seen their delivery dates extended to later in the year.

It’s unclear how the issue will affect the overall capacity of Tesla’s Berlin plant.
