The day I deleted the post on BBS of Jiaotong University

A lot of posts have been deleted recently, which reminds me of the days when I deleted posts at Jiaotong University BBS. Both my undergraduate and master’s degrees were studied at Shanghai Jiaotong University. I used to be the webmaster of our school BBS. Now, if you search for “Drinking Water Siyuan Webmaster List” (the name of our school BBS is “Drinking Water Siyuan BBS”, because “Drinking Water Siyuan, patriotism honors the school” is our school motto), the first result is the list of previous Webmasters. The person on the list called “mvm” who served as the “discussion area manager” from 2001.06 to 2002.03 is me: Yes, there will be multiple webmasters at the same time. We can, like the Chinese Football Association, have one chairman of the Football Association, and then have several vice-chairmen. We can call the “station manager” the “webmaster”, and the webmaster who is in charge of other responsibilities as the “deputy webmaster”. I guess we didn’t distinguish between “webmaster” and “deputy webmaster” at that time. One of the main reasons may be that everyone has a sense of equality at work. As can be seen from the above list, multiple webmasters have division of labor: “Station Manager” is the head of the webmaster, and usually has more connections with the school. The Disciplinary Officer is responsible for managing complaints. There were complaints from two ends in three days, some complained about the owner of the board, and some complained about the webmaster. At that time, the common phrase of the stationmaster was “you are both a referee and a player”. “Program maintenance”, “system maintenance” is the IT department, haha. The system we use for our BBS is called Firebird, and the code is now available on GitHub (github.com/fbbs/fbbs). Usually the code needs to be patched, the machine needs to be upgraded and expanded, and the access to the network, IP address, domain name, public network and education network, etc., these things are all responsible for “program maintenance” and “system maintenance”. Sometimes I have other students to help, sometimes I have to do it myself. The responsible content of “board owner management” and “board settings” is the literal meaning. The BBS is divided according to the board. First, it is divided into several discussion areas (for example, the board of each department is one area, and the board of each sports theme is one area), and there are several boards under each discussion. Opening a new board, closing an old board that no one goes to, and modifying the board owner are all operations that require administrator permissions, and are all operated by the webmaster responsible for the board and the board owner. The webmaster in charge of the board sometimes has to deal with some disputes: whether a certain boss should be closed, and whether a new board should be opened. The most number of webmasters is the “discussion area manager”, and the content in charge is the posts made by everyone. What I do is “discussion board manager”. One of my daily tasks is deleting posts. Deleting posts is usually the responsibility of the owner of each board. But sometimes if the owner is not there, or the owner doesn’t care, or the matter is urgent, or everyone is arguing more, and the owner can’t figure it out, I just go and take care of it. It is said that it is deleted, but in fact it is rarely deleted. Explosive cursing, illegal and reactionary remarks will be deleted directly. Most of the other people are fighting a war of words. Make a collection of this and then delete it. Sometimes when I encounter a person who is too poor, I will block the person, that is, stop the speech, and prevent that person from posting. Webmasters are often scolded for deleting posts and banning people. It was popular at the time to say “I don’t agree with you, but I will defend your right to speak to the death.” Sometimes I don’t want to be criticized as “the webmaster suppresses freedom of speech”, so I don’t delete the post, but go back to the post and criticize it. I type fast, I participated in debate competitions in high school, and I read a lot of books. In those dazed days, I still don’t quite understand. In fact, a few people were red-faced when they argued, but most of the people around didn’t care what you were arguing about. In March 2002, I left school after graduating with a master’s degree, and I stopped being a webmaster. The years I spent with SJTUBBS were really interesting years. Later, the Internet went from forums to blogs to Weibo to WeChat, and various phenomena were common, from trolls to diodes to those who failed in Chinese, from demagogue to rushing towers, from deleting posts and banning to “playing again as a player and a referee” From “I don’t agree with you but I will defend your right to speak to the death”, and various logical fallacies (appeal to authority, appeal to public opinion, straw man fallacy, false dilemma, etc.), those on BBS Years have given us a taste.
