At the CppNorth developer conference not long ago, Google engineer Chandler Carruth announced a new open source development language called “Carbon”, claiming that it will be the successor of C++.
And now, “Father of C++” Bjarne Stroustrup, has commented on the young challenger.
There are always new languages trying to be the successor to C++, Bjarne said, and he welcomes experimentation with programming languages and programming styles.
But like Bjarne’s attitude towards other successors, he doesn’t want to judge Carbon right now.
Bjarne believes that Carbon is too young and specs to be too young for him to really make meaningful technical comments.
As a language that claims to be the successor of C++, Carbon has a lot of features that are compatible with C++. A skilled C++ developer will be able to quickly get started with Carbon and be proficient in editing programs.
The Carbon team also mentioned that Carbon, on the basis of inheriting the existing features and ecology of C++, is young enough and “modern” enough, has a broader optimization space, and has greater potential.
