This beautiful coloured woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai belongs to the “Famous Bridge Scenery in the Provinces” series. Tenma Bridge is the closest bridge to Osaka Castle among the “Osaka Three Bridges” which are the furthest upstream of the Yudo River. Here, Katsushika Hokusai showed scenes from the night of the Tenma Festival in the sixth month (late summer), the bridge was crowded with spectators and hung with lanterns. The number of boats on the river is somewhat rare, and the festival’s description in “Ding Meizheng (1796)” can see that the festival is very lively: “Seeing it with my own eyes is a hundred times better than the legend.” However, Katsushika Hokusai seems more interested in emphasizing the graceful geometry of the wide, curved bridge than in depicting the event of the festival.
Japanese woodcuts about bridges have had an important influence on the development of Western art history, and tomorrow you will find out why! Also check out our Japanese art postcard set with 50 stunning masterpieces, and of course Hokusai by Katsushika. : )
