According to a TikTok announcement, European TikTok users will be able to turn off personalized recommendations, including the “For You” and “Live feeds” channels. However, as of press time, TikTok has not provided the effective date of this function. It is only known that the change needs to be completed by August 28 at the latest.

The changes are said to be due to stricter requirements for Internet companies under the European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA): large online platforms should allow users to opt out of personalized content when viewing content recommendations. The current “personalized content” provided by Internet companies for users is usually based on tracking and analysis of user activities.

Before that, TikTok would show users content based on personal interests. After the adjustment, it will show users “popular content from where the user lives and around the world.” After selecting non-personalized recommendations, the videos provided by the “Follow” and “Friends” sections will be displayed in chronological order. In addition, European youth users aged 13-17 will not be affected by personalized advertisements, so there is no need to choose whether to turn on the personalized recommendation function.

Note: The EU DSA Act has restricted 19 Internet service providers providing services in Europe. The detailed list is as follows:

AliExpress

Amazon Amazon Store

Apple AppStore

Booking.com (hotel reservation site)

Facebook

Google Play Store

Google Maps Service
