MarketWatch reported on September 16 that Uber Technologies said on Thursday local time that it was investigating a “cybersecurity incident.” The company has reportedly shut down multiple internal systems in an attempt to determine the extent of the damage to its network.
According to an earlier report by The New York Times, Uber employees received a message on Thursday afternoon local time that read, “I declare that I am a hacker and that Uber has suffered a data breach.” The other party also listed several internal databases, Claims that these databases have been leaked. Uber then shut down its Slack messaging system, as well as some engineering systems.
An Uber spokesperson told The New York Times that an employee’s Slack account was compromised, allowing hackers to gain access to other internal systems. Slack is owned by Oracle Corporation. It’s unclear exactly what data was compromised and how many people were potentially affected. “We are currently responding to a cybersecurity incident. Law enforcement is being contacted,” Uber said in a statement on Twitter.
