Today, Uber updated its safety guidelines on its website, saying that “beginning April 19, 2022, riders and drivers will not be required to wear masks while using Uber. However, the CDC ( CDC) still recommends that if you have certain personal risk factors and/or high levels of transmission in your area, it is best to also wear a mask.”

Uber’s change comes after a federal judge in Florida ruled Monday that “the CDC has overstepped its authority to require masks on planes and other public transportation.”

Additionally, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will no longer mandate the wearing of masks on public transportation. Airlines including United, Delta and Alaska have also said masks are no longer required. And Amtrak also lists masks as an option.

Uber also pointed out that “due to personal or family health conditions, some people may feel safer wearing a mask. Therefore, drivers and passengers should respect each other’s choices.”

Although Uber has updated its safety guidelines, passengers and drivers are no longer required to wear masks. But so far, the Uber app still asks riders to confirm whether they’re wearing a mask. Uber has yet to comment.

Ahead of the Florida judge’s ruling, the CDC has extended the federal government’s requirement for masks on public transportation until May 3, citing rising cases of BA.2 Omicron.

Subsequently, the CDC said that, in light of the Florida court ruling, the nationwide order to wear masks on public transportation will expire on April 18. However, the CDC continues to recommend that people wear masks in public transportation settings.
